Of course what I was talking about was purely theoretical and the guys got a point about 60 miles of driving-because where are you going to find 60 miles of level ground.Even the Salt Lakes don't go that far. I think the problem here is one of communication-I'm trying to convey what is possible on level ground at 60 mph .And in the real world that doesn't exist for very far, however, there are plenty of people who have done 30 mpg on extended hiway travel in these cars. But I'm not a mathematician-so I'm putting the numbers out there-anybody that wants to interpret them go ahead. But I'm just reporting what I've observed in my last year of watching the computer readouts-anybody else want to hook up some equipment and do the same ?

Makes me feel a little better just hearing you guys talk of how sucky gas mileage yall are getting. My new Z is averaging around 20MPG and i've been scratching my head over this because the other '99 Z I had would get 23-24MPG just normal driving....and we took it on vacation one year and got 29MPG on the highway! --(this was in the "gas mileage" thread )----

example: if it uses 1.5 gallons, that means you could do no better then 40mpg at 60mph maintaining 1500rpms. Now take in wind, and pulling 3500lbs. A basic rule that I have heard is 1 mpg loss for every 300lbs. So if your car weighs 1200lbs with an LS1 you could get 36mpg. Using that table a 3400lbs car would get 28mpg.

Gas consumption is primarily based on torque output. If you produce 200ftlbs at 1500rpms (200*1500/5252=57hp) thats 57hp. A 2.0l at 2500rpms will produce 60ftlbs of torque (60*2500/5252= 28hp) thats 28hp, so almost half the fuel is required for the 2.0l compared to a 5.7l at these rpms. The new SRT8s using only 4cyl on the highway basically cuts there fuel requirments in half, but they still cant break 30mpg because of the vehicle weight.
I can do better than that-I can get a readout on my motor in neutral in gph at 1500 rpm in a couple seconds if that would help.Let me check this and somebody else can run the numbers. But you would have to explain how this corresponds to actual driving conditions.I've noticed for example that you can get better fuel mileage at 60 mph by downshifting into 5th gear on the steeper uphills, same mph, less load on the engine by downshifting, more rpm from the motor.A skilled driver can get more mileage by knowing when to downshift too.
