mobil 1 or royal purple?
My SS has had mobil 1 in it since birth lol, i went to the local pepboys and saw they carry royal purple now, before i had to go to summit or pace performance...well anywyas its only 70 cents more a quart than mobil 1 now because they raised mobil 1 to 6.29 a qt. royal purple is 6.99 a qt.
so should i change to royal p or stay with mobil 1??

Neither.
Both are WAY too expensive. Mobil 1 isn't even fully synthetic anymore.
That new Pennzoil Platinum is supposed to be a great synthetic.

The fact that they use a Basestock III now instead of the synthetic basestock IV.
Mobil 1 is still a GREAT oil. Just not worth the asking price. Should be more like $2.50-$3 a quart instead of $6+ a quart.

I use VP synthetics.
$55 bucks for a 12 quart case shipped.
Daily driver will get the rest of the Mobil 1 I have sitting around.
Dirty oil is a good thing.
Means it is working. Dirty doesn't mean it needs changed.

Royal Purple and Redline are pure synthetics.
I use Royal Purple 10W-30, I live in a very warm climate.

I've been using Royal Purple since my first oil change. I'm sticking with it, but that's personal preference. I trust it. Go with what you trust...that's why there are so many oils out there...something for everyone.

I just switched from only mobil1 to pennzoil platinum, $19 for the 5 quart bottle. Go read "oil junkie" 20+ pages and see the bad rap mobil1 gets for shearing after heat-up. Sarge is the true oil junkie.

I have RP in my tranny, rear, and motor. I have been happy with it so far. I had some tranny noise before I started using RP, so I'm not necessarily happy with the factory tranny fluid anyway. I have a T56.
Hopefully I can get the tranny fixed soon, but I suspect it won't be that cheap...I think it's my input shaft bearing...yay me! I am hoping to do a new clutch/flywheel combo as well. We'll see how it all works out, but I plan to stick with RP either way.

I have heard that Mobil ! has gone back to what can be classified as fully synthetic - then again the FTC has changed the definition for what you can or can not call synthetic.
Be interesting to write a few people and try for a definitive answer.
I have no problem with Mobil 1, it's a good oil base with good detergent additives. Castrol and Valvoline are also good oils.

OK....Listen up guys....don't get caught up in this 100% synthetic bullshit.
Todays Conventional SM rated oils are better than many oils that are marketed as "synthetic" anyway. Lets walk through this.
Mobil1 has changed their basestock. For whatever reason...shortage of PAO ( Katrina) or the bean counters wanted more profit. Fact is the basestock has changed and clearly reflects a GroupIII basestock. Mobil1 also changed their marketing from "100% PAO" to "Includes 100% PAO"...see the difference? I'll get to why that doesn't really matter, outside of being overpriced and disingenuous in a minute....But Mobil1 is a good(not great) oil. Has higher than average wear metals in almost every LS1/LS2 UOA I have ever seen......and also has issue with shearing....that is bad kids because when an oil shears it leaves pressure point ( see rod bearings) with little to no protection=high wear metals in your UOA. I put Mobil1 in the middle of the pack at best.....Royal Purple is a real disappointment. Once again they have a significant shearing problem. Racing 41 sheared to a low 30 weight on me and I have the worse UOA I have ever had. Come to find out RP is having that issue across their product line. I'm not touching that purple stuff until they make some changes and I see it in multiple UOA's.
Folks what was "best" last year may suck donkey butt this year. These guys change their base stocks and add packs like I change my skivvies. So you must stay up on what is going on....and yes I make the investment and get VOA's done by Terry Dyson himself....so no marketing crap enters into the equation....OK....Pennzoil Platinum/Amsoil hands down the best oils out there. RedLine is not for street driven cars....detergents are almost non existent and sludge is an issue running it on the street for long periods of time. As I mentioned the SM rated conventional are kick butt.....Castrol GTX/Pennzoil ( Yellow Bottle ) and Quaker State are loaded with outstanding add packs and are delivering excellent wear UOA's. Go 5000 miles with any of these in total confidence. I'll get into any specifics about any statements I have made here with anybody....feel free to ask away and I'll do my best to answer you. This is my signature. It is mine. Nobody else has one like it.
