    Mixing oils?

I just bought my car about a month and a half ago and the dealership i bought it from did an oil change and all that kind of stuff but i was checking my oil a couple of days ago and it could use a little more. I know that ls1's burn oil slowly but i dont know what kind of oil is in it and a local place told me that if its regular oil i shouldnt mix synthetic with it, so my question is if i just add some synthetic oil to top of my engine until i do an oil change is it going to hurt anything or are these guys full of shit?

Well, if you've got the cash, save yourself some worries and just do another oil change with full syn...

As for just adding some... I *doubt* you would cause much harm... but to be safe just add the "partial" synthetic.

    Or... ask the dealer?

It is fine to mix, don't worry about it.

SSTODD is correct. Just top off your engine with the synthetic oil. It will mix OK. Just do it and don't worry about it. The next oil change use the 5w-30 synthetic oil.

thanks for the replies everyone i guess ill just top it off with some synthetic. Why do u think i should go with the 5w30? i always thought that your supposed to run 10w30 in these cars. It gets cold in the winters here if that makes a difference.

Because 5w-30 is the oil that the manif. suggest. However, I run 0w-30 Amsoil year round and it does a great job for me..

Just a idea, Ls1s need 5.5 quarts of oil. The dealership might of just put in 5. I'm just bringing this up because it happened to me when I first got my SS. Also don't worry about mixing the oil, but I would use synthetic oil from now on, if I were you.

I figured they used 5.5 I always thought that every 350 gm engine took 5litres I changed it and found that 5 litres wasn't quite enough thanks for setting my mind at ease.

Ok im starting to get a little confused. I heard also a few times that you got to keep with the same kind of oil in the car, like if you start off with synthetic it always has to run synthetic and the same for conventional. BTW what is the best oil to run with the LS1?

That is all a myth, not true. The oil guru Sarge has been talking about Pennzoil Platinum synthetic 10-30 and I switched my last oil change.

Do a search on oil on this site and you will find pages and pages of research on oil and filters to use and not use (FRAM). All oil is NOT the same but most are better than years ago. He asked what the "BEST" was and the wear numbers from used oil anaylsis is what people are quoting.
