metallic slapping noise worse w/ rpm

i have a 2001 a4 ss with about 62000 miles on it. yesterday im getting on the freeway which is a steady decline straightaway. so as i step on the gas to merge the rpms fly up really high . the car sputters a little then this loud metallic slapping noise starts. at first i thought somthing must be hitting the belt so i pull over and look and nope its internal. i drive it home (about 2 miles) and i drained the oil. i checked it and looked fine.im about to pull the valve covers but what should i look for? thanks in advance

Did it sound like it was coming from up top or down below on the motor? How did the car run the 2 miles home? What did your oil pressure look like?

hmm not really sure where it sounded like it was coming from but it ran fine for the 2 miles and oil pressure was normal. although i was pretty low on oil before all this happened. possibly a cause?

Not necessarily although low on oil is never a good thing. I'm just trying to get a better description so everyone knows a little better about what happened. It could be a ton of things. When you say the rpm's flew high did it bounce off of the rev limiter? I'm wondering if you bent a pushrod or something along those lines.

Check 2 see if you bent a pushrod or 2 if you have the stock pushrods. Also double check the rockers are all in tact. I had several come apart on me.

cool. i've been working on pulling the valve covers today. i finally have gotten the coil packs off . how do you get that bolt on the back of the head on the left side loose though. you know the one for the bracket that holds the pcv valve or whatever?
