Major mysterious clunking noise under acceleration...
Help! I just looked at a really nice '95 Z convertible (I know --not an LS-1, but please bear with me) I want to purchase, an adult-owned automatic in great shape and ran well, but when I gave it more than part throttle at low speeds (with three people aboard), there was a major bang against the underside of the floor as if the rear axle had just broken a control arm. I've been in a couple of Zs before that didn't do that with a load of passengers, and I'm wondering if the center "traction bar/beam" thing that bolts from the trans to the rear axle might be loose, or is it possible that a broken engine or trans mount might cause one of the the items crammed into the center tunnel ----- drive-shaft, exhaust, and traction bar/beam --- to hit the tunnel...??? Or could it simply be a broken u-joint or exhaust mount...??? Any thing you guys can tell me would be greatly appreciated --- I really want to buy this car, and it is a great price. It's the car I've dreamed of for years with my limited income, but could never afford until now.
Oh, and if you can give me any other ideas of what to look for when inspecting a 90,000-mile convertible, let me know...
One other thing... the front suspension tracked well, but also felt very loose when hitting bumps. Is this normal for a convertible, or is it possible these are symptoms that this car has been beat on...???
Thanks,
Don

Take it to a decent shop and have them inspect it. That's really the only way you can get under it to check it out good. This is also money well spent and if they find any problems you'll be happy you went through the trouble of doing it. Any of the items you mentioned could cause that noise. If the shocks are worn out you could just be bottoming out and banging into the bump stops.

Thanks everyone. The guy is going to have it repaired, so whatever it is, I'll now only have to worry about what caused it ---- old age or a good beating!

I would also look at the lower control arms. From the way you described it as " there was a major bang against the underside of the floor as if the rear axle had just broken a control arm" makes me think the sound came from behind you. After my subframe install the lower control arms weren't torqued down tight enough and made them bang. The tranny mount is also another good suggestion.
I would ask if the opti has ever been replaced on that car. I would guess the car is just due up for struts and shocks is why it was loose over bumps but without driving it and looking it over that would just be a guess.
