I'e seen bad plug wires cause a rough/misfire at idle. Make sure you don't have any that are arcing. That could also do strange things at high rpm. So could bad gas.

According to the tuner, my MAF was having weird readings when the car was having trouble idling. He cleaned it off and the readings came back to normal...might be worth cleaning it if its been awhile. (I know mine hadnt been cleaned in forever)

yes and yes. If its reading low, it can lean the air/fuel ratio and cause pinging and idle problems

no, it is not ported and i did try cleaning it. that is why i didnt think it was the maff but just want to make sure. im pretty sure i need new spark plug wires but i wasnt sure if they could cause the intermittent high rpm ping. i know they could cause a missfire but could they cause a ping?

If you are "pretty sure" you need new wires...why not go ahead and replace them so that there is no doubt that it could be from those?

I would start off with cleaning the MAF. Then if the problem persists, then change the wires and plugs.

Are you running a "wet" style air filter? I have seen Many cars that have a over oiled K&N or someone elses filter that is constantly putting a film of oil on the MAF throwing off the readings.

no, paper filter but i tried running octane boost and the ping is gone. the slight missfire at idle is still their but the high rpm ping is gone. what does that mean, does it mean that it is a carbon problem

What mods have been done to the car? And if it has mods, has it been tuned?

What kind of milage is on the motor?
As I'm sure you know or have read the LS motors consume oil due to there shitty pcv system. With that being said the piston faces and valve faces accumulate A LOT of carbon/oil build up. With that it increases comp. which will cause pinging. Have you ever SeaFoamed or ran AutoRX through the brake booster hose to clean the inside of the motor out?
If Not I HIGHLY recommend you do so. And DON'T do it at home it will SMOKE out your neibors. I had someone call the fire dept. before at my old shop thinking it was on fire. . . . . . . . Nope just a 03 Vette.

I would also do the cheap mod to eliminate the oil consumption in your car.

Our ignitions are VERY high powered with the individual coils for every cylinder so Most of the time you wont notice a bad plug wire. It's freaking 8" long.

the car has 73,000 miles and i already did the seafoam and changed over to a ls6 valley pan and catch can for the oil consumption issue. does it usually take a couple treatments of seafoam? and like i said earlier the octane boost fixed the ping, what does that mean? is it carbon buildup

It just depends on how exactly the first can was consumed in the engine. Plus how it was driving before you got it. If it was babied most of its life than there probably is a shit load of build up in it. It could of also been the brand of gas you have been running. Some are better than others. Did the car smoke a lot when you seafoamed it? Did you suck the whole can at once? I will suck half of the can then go drive the car doing Many full throttle accelerations until it stops smoking. Then on the second half I suck it through @ idle instead of 2000-2300rpm. Right before all is consumed I will allow it to stall the engine then letting it sit for 5-10 min. to break up the remaining shit. I have had cars that I had to drive for 30-40 miles on the freeway before All smoking stopped.

It's Very hard to diagnose over the web.
