MAF... Clean or not to Clean?

i have read posts on this site and others. many say to simply clean MAF Sensor when the code P0102 is thrown. It was month ago when i read here to never bother with cleaning it. I have a SLP lid and a k&n filter. Ive never oiled filter. only owned car a month. Also the code comes on only at random times i can drive over 100 miles no problem.i dont drive the car daily and when the code comes on its usually just for that day. next start up 2 days to a week later its off. today i was finally able to make it to a part store while light was still on to run the code "P0102 Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Low Frequency" Basically i wanna know should i clean or buy new??

    thx for any help

Clean it! Use this.....sold at any auto parts store. I guarantee that K&N oiled filter has gunked up your MAF.

I used that same cleaner and I swear it was like I picked up 10 horsepower!! My filter had fallen off my blower inlet, and I didn't know it,so it got pretty dirty!! Good stuff!!!

the oil. it is a problem when people over oil their filter...the oil coats the maf and causes false readings and so forth.

The real problem with the KN is that it lets dirt and debris though when clean..and exponentially more when dirty. I am waiting to switch.

The K&N is an oiled cotton gauze which actually has really large holes in it. A paper filter provides better filtration and the flow is actually not as dramatically different as you would think. You can search and find threads on here. Of course, you have die hard K&N fans that will argue it to their grave and I am not going to engage in useless debate. Quite simply, it's your engine, and you can install whatever filter you want on it.

My personal experience -- we ran the local dirt tracks for several years back in the mid-90's. The first year, our car was equipped with a K&N filter and pre-filter. The filter was cleaned and serviced every week during the race season. The end of season tear down revealed an engine full of dirt with the bearings severely scored.

Also in one of those threads I have pictures posted that clearly show the holes in the filter Jeff was speaking of. I could actually see through the holes in the filter medium and see what was on the other side of my basement!!! It caused black oil @ only 1500 miles or about half of every oil change interval if changed every 3000mi. I do not beat on my car (which is in show room condition). I went back to a simple paper filter and my oil has turned only dark honey colored @ like 1000 miles till next change. I'm parked for the season and will change the oil reguardless of it color come spring. But the difference in color alone was enough for me. There was also NO improved power and if there by slim chance was a gain, sertainly nowhere near their advertised gains...

Just clean your MAF with the cleaner in the thread and put in a paper filter. This stuff works great on the throttle body too.

Just like everyone has said, clean the maf real good, also clean the throttle body while your in there, Then throw that Pos K&N filter in the trash and pick up a paper filter, Flows just as well and filters even better.
