    LS1 weight length question

Does anyone have any figures for the weight and length of an LS1?

Thinking of doing a project using one and a transaxle, but need to get some idea of weight and length before getting the stuff together.

I know there are lots of variables but I cannot find anything useful on the web.

    Thanks

I guess that must be the car as a whole guys!!!

The other engine I am considering is the Audi v8 which comes in at 190kg, about 418 pounds.

I am trying to do center of gravity calculations and so I neeed the centre of mass of the LS1 engine

It's amazing to me how many people are referring to the F-body as an "LS1"-like the motor is the name of the car. Let us know how the project goes-sounds very interesting.

Yeah, or they are replying to a post they haven't read carefully. That happens a lot on this board.

A buddy of mine has a 2004 S4 and has had MANY problems, he has been in the shop at LEAST once a month. Alternator has died 3 times his coilpack exploded?? or something and the entire engine caught fire at 18,000 miles.. he was under warranty though fixed for free. He is currently considering going through the lemon law to get his money refunded. Although besides the problems its a damn fast car.

    Thanks for the help!!!

RainMan - sweet dude - just what I want - many thanks

02z28ls1 - thanks for confirming - I was worrying that I had got the designation wrong - LS1 is the engine and not a car???

Will post back if we do anything. Considering a lightweight V8 and ZF transaxle in an open formula circuit car. Want to keep weight low and central. Over here the push rods in the LS1 are considered rather old tech, but as long as they are stiff and low inertia there is nothing wrong in my opinion - and for racing for a couple of hours - cheapish relability is always good!!

WinSomeLoseNone - your mate sounds like he is having bad luck - the Audi V8 is known as a solid reliable motor over here in Europe. I hope the deal is settled to his satisfaction.

    Keep lucky - all

Fully dressed engine weight (all accessories)

459 lb for engine set up for automatic transmission
503 lb for engine set up for manual transmission

    Width 30.4 inches
    Height 25.3 inches
    Length 27.3 inches

To compare - LT1 fully dressed weight
    562 lbs auto
    620 lbs manual
    Width 29.5 inches
    Height 27.2 inches
    Length 27.9 inches

Another source shows 457.6 lbs auto / 497.2 lbs manual for the LS1. The weights will vary a little depending on which version of the engine you are using. This may be for the first few years since it is a little lighter. (Cast iron manifolds weigh more than the steel manifolds)

    Thanks for the info DarthD

This project has gone on hold as we have decided to go Classic car rallying with a 1959 Alfa Romeo Guiletta.
The twin cam is a bit different from a LS1 !!
