    LS1 , swapping

    Hi , new here , I just purchased my first LS1 car , 99 Firebird WS6 , the 5.7 has a rod knocking , so my question is ,
what years of these engines interchange ? will a 6.0 liter bolt in ? if it has to come apart I think now is the time to upgrade .
what do the 4.8, 5.3 , 5.7, 6.0 , have in common , are these all the same on the out side , thanks for the help ,

    Butch

I believe the LS2 is the same block as the LS1. Just larger displacement and I cannot remember if the LS2 is sleeved like the LS1. And you will need the computer from the LS2 if I recall.

I had a similar question a while back and was told a 6.0 from a truck would bolt in. Most of them were only rated at 300hp, the H.O. ones were like 345hp. Not much of an upgrade if you ask me unless you throw on a new top end. Mine piston slaps like crazy when cold which can't be good, I like the idea of swapping in a ls6, I read in another thread they can put down close to 400hp with proper tuning. And to answer your question about the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0(non ls2) they all have cast iron blocks while the 5.7 ls1 is all aluminum.

    Swapping ,

Thanks for the feedback , so is the ls-2 , the same as the ls1 in my car 99 firebird ? I have found a donor ls2 6.0 liter , 2007 engine , will this bolt into the car ? will my inatke work ? they look different , can I use the 6.0 liter injectors , etc ? and have my computer re-flashed ? the replacement engine is a RPO LY6 , It's the 400 hp version that's all aluminum , I guess I want to know what will interchange and what won't ? thanks

A 2007 LS2 has a 58 tooth crank reluctor that won't work with you f-body computer. However there is a solution. Lingenfelter makes a conversion box that converts the 58 to a 24 so you PCM can run the engine.

Any LS engine will bolt in ANY PLACE, any, LS engine has been. From the 4.8 to the LS7. All the trans enterchange.

Your 99 has a 24 tooth reluctor wheel ON the crankshaft, for your, computer. The cheepest way to upgrade is an LQ4 all aluminum, or the LQ9 iron. Booth have 4.000 bore and are fitted with the same head as an LS6, only larger combustion chamber. The LQ9 has higher compression I think.
All LS style engines use a 3.622 stroke crank shaft except: LS7 and the 4.8, 4800 seires.. LS7-4.000- stroke crank, and the 4.8 is 3.267 stroke. Rod length is also different. I dont know about LS7, but the 4.8 is like, 6.125 compared to a stock 5.7 wich is 6.095.[I think]
Also, the LQ9 and 4 you will have to drill and tap for the alternator[ no big deal]
GOOD LUCK! Keep posting your progress

Gm made 4.8/5.3/5.7/6.0 in alluminum. All are cheep.
The LQ4/LQ9 are both 6.0 and rated at 300-347hp and 360-380lb-ft. Thae Silverodo SS has an LQ9 iron block.
LS6- is rated at 385-405hp and 385-400ft-lb but with a different cam and length of pushrod cause of the base circle of the cam.
The heads flow the same on the LQ4 and LQ9 as the LS6. Why not use one of them? A cam kit will make one of these engines run

My LQ9 came from a GMC Denalli. A drunk ass fool rear ended the truck.

put an ls3 in there, should bolt right in, you will need a few of your ls1 parts to move over to the ls3.
