    Issue with car starting

Yesterday, I started the Camaro to let it run (which I do from time to time since I don't drive it much) and after running for 3- 5 mins, it suddenly shut off and will not start again. I'm getting a SES light and the engine tries to turn over, but nothing beyond that. I have a 12 disc changer in the car that I hear it shuffling discs, which leads me to think it's something electrical. It's not the battery, as the car tries to start though I did try jumping it with my other car to be sure.

Any ideas? Should I get my hands on a scanner to check for thrown codes to narrow down the exact problem? Thanks!

I would grab a scanner to look into the issue further. Almost sounds vibration related as the car started and died a few mins afterward. I was going to ask how your battery terminals were, but it looks like you are okay in that department. I know some of the side terminal batteries had issues with the metal sleeves coming out of the casing. Just thought about the IAC possibly being dirty. Check that too just to be safe. Keep us posted.

I love having my scanner. IMHO, everyone should have one. Makes life a lot easier.

Thanks for the info. I still intend to get my hands on a scanner to check the codes. How do you mean vibration related?

I turned the key to aux and didn't notice a sound. Strangely, every time I've tried to start the car, my the 12 disc changer in the back starts running through the CD's.

I finally got a scanner and scanned the codes. I got these two results.

Bad security chip in the key or something else ignition system related?

Looks like the chip or a worn ignition cylinder. Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the chip? Do you have another key to try?

No, I don't have another key to try. What do you suggest I use to try cleaning the contacts on the chip? Just simple soap and water?

Try some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. Do you have a volt meter?

No I don't. What would I use the volt meter for?

To test the chip for resistance. If nothing registers then a new key might fix the issue.

Understood. I'll try cleaning the chip first and go from there. Thanks for the help!

I'm pretty sure there's a thread on here somewhere that instructs you on how to bypass the VATS ( I think that's what it's called ) by using resistors that you can buy -- that's if you can't get a key to work -- just a thought.

Thanks for the info guys. Just to fill you in, I'm going to try to sell the car and simply want to get it running. If a new key is all I need, I'll go that route. If it's more, I'll obviously have to spend the money to get it fixed (unless a seller comes along and wants the car as is).

It sounds like my only option under that scenario is to have the car towed to a Chevy dealership so they can program a new key to the car.
