How to inspect a clogged fuel filter

I've got a GF-822 fuel filter/pressure regulator that has been clogging up (at least I hope that's what's happening). I am going to replace it with a new one today, but would like to see the guts of the old one. Anybody know how to open it?
I plan on letting the fuel dry out for a week or two, and then cut it open with a tube cutter. However, I wonder if it can be pried apart at the manufacturer's seam.

I've used a pipe cutter. But, you may not like what you find inside. I've been disappointed in the quality of the filter media.

Considering the last one I bought for the trans am was only $11 I'm not too shocked. That might be a good bit cheaper then retail since my buddy gets alot of stuff for me for wholesale through his shop.
