How do you replace spoiler brake light in an SS?

The plastic has corroded and broken off so the screws that hold it in are useless so the brake light just dangles by the wire in the wind. I went to go take it off and well....you can't?!?

It makes no sense.....it's like the electrical connection to the light is sawderred (sp?) in. There is no type of socket to have it "click" in or out of like normal lights. I think the previous owner did something b/c the light also has this annoying blink whenever you apply the brakes, def not originally there from the factory. So how do i go about replacing this? Any other SS people have this type of connection to the spoiler light?

Maybe the previous owner soldered some gimmicky light assembly that flashes? You might have to go to your local junkyard or eBay for an OEM assembly.

The factory setups do have a quick disconnect fitting up inside the decklid behind one of the rubber plugs.

Unfortunately when you buy a new replacement light it doesn't come with the quick disconnect. If you do what I did and hit GM for the correct terminals you can transfer the plug over.

Unfortunately most people don't do that and just connect the wires via solder or crimping.
Sounds like that's what someone has done to yours.

Yes they are LED's. I had a few burn out. Can't replace the LED's, have to replace the entire light assembly,,,,sucks.

That's how I found out the hard way about the terminals and such on the replacement lights.

Yes, they are tiny LED's soldered onto a board.

AHA!!! OK. Like my car. I remember when the inside third brake light went on mine. Mine did the same "pulsing" as the OPs. Got one from eBay for $17 shipped since the dealer told me the assemblies were "on national backorder". And the dealer wanted like $180 with my discount.

That's pretty cheap for the light assembly. If I remember right, It's been a couple years but I paid somewhere in the $50 neighborhood from a supplier. At the time SLP was still selling them too for about $100 I think.
Either way,,,mine came in an SLP box with SLP and a part number molded right into the lense. Same ones that were installed on the car when new,,,,,yet it didn't come with a stupid disconnect plug,,,,go figure

That appears to be a 3rd brake light for a stock Z28 spoiler judging by the shape of it.
Those originally were just standard light bulb type lights and were easy to change just bulbs.

    The SS spoilers used LED's.

Evidently it appears the aftermarket is now making LED lights for the Z28 spoilers too.

    Ah okay.

Ya that one appears to be an SS LED setup. Not sure why the picture shows it all blown apart though.

When I bought mine it comes as a complete assembly ready to bolt on,,,,,(minus the quick disconnect plug of course though )

okay so when i order the new light what is the best way to take the other one out and install this? just cut the insulation of the wires, twist them together, and sawder them together and put electrical tape on? thanks for all the replies...i am kind of retarded when it comes to fixing cars.

Crimp, solder, either way will work.

That would be the easy way, and I assume that's what most people are doing.

I preferred to hit my local dealer for those terminals, and then transfer over the quick disconnect plug from the old light. The terminals were only a few pennies at the dealer. I didn't have any luck finding them at a local parts store.

It's a little more work but I wanted to keep it the way it's supposed to be. I'm wierd that way.
