How can I clear a SEL (service engine light)
Anyway to do this? I tried disconnecting the battery terminals but didnt work. The trip meter didnt reset so I figured maybe there another way? Or is it permanent until cleared?

More than likely, it will stay there until you connect a code scanner to it and repair what is shooting the code.

Most autoparts stores can do it -- but some will refuse if it is an emissions problem that tripped the SES.

I know my sel light was on when I had th eplugs changed and the idiot left one loose. it went away when tightened. So I'm really wondering since the light is remaining on... is there a condition that is ongoing? Or do some things trip the sel light and cause it to stay on even though everything is back to normal?
thanks guys

Depends on what triggered it. Some will clear on their own after a set number of starts in which the problem is not repeated. Best thing to do is scan it. You can get a small code reader for under $30 and for a bit more money you can buy a unit that will also re-set your SES. I have a mid-priced Actron that I use and it has been very helpful on all our OBDII cars.

Not that I am aware of. The code readers will display the code, ie. "P0410", and usually give a brief description of the problem, ie. "Secondary Air Solenoid Low Voltage" (I am just making this up as an example). I have found that on most of our cars, I can go on-line and search the make, model and code for detailed repair information. There is a list of codes stickied on here somewhere too.
