    4.4x which I guess would be 4400

did he get gold or silver band resistors because the variance could be causing the issue.....you'll want to get as close to the median value as you can. Also....go a step up and a step down from that number 11 too. I'm assuming he doesn't have a 2nd key you can test?

I think the allowance for the resistor range for the BCM is +/- 100 ohms. So, if you have a 4400 ohm key, then a 4300-4500 resistor should work. The ohm range may be +/- 50 ohms, tho.

I just did this on my car, I have key number one, 500 ohm. I have a 461 ohm resistor wired in, no problems.

No spare key and his key isn't the original either. He got gold band resistors, good idea on going a step up. We tried a step down because that's the key I have and I had some resistors laying around but that didn't work but we'll definitely give key #12 a shot also. I'll probably tell him to go down to Radioshack and pick up some resistors closer to 4700 also.

The chart doesn't have a 4400 ohm key though, so that's the problem. We're also trying to guess exactly what key he has.

Could the dealer tell him what key he has if he took his tittle and what not proving its his car?

seems like I remember them being able to do that......for a fee of course. If his key now is working, or was working, then you know it has to be pretty close. I would put it dead on the median of the surrounding values.

We got it done! When he tried adding the resistors for key #10 (same as mine) he didn't get it on right. We tried again yesterday, before heading out to get resistors for the key above his, just unplugged mine and plugged it into his and she started right up! So we cut his white wires and hooked up the resisitors there the same way as mine is set up and he is all good now! Funny how things work, we have the same key

Question Orion, Does this bypass trick disable some functions of the car or will the alarm system and the like still work as it should??

the only thing this really does is disable the key side of vats......the vats system will think the correct key is in the cylinder so the car could technically be hot wired. I'm pretty sure the alarm will still function although I've never personally tested it to see.

That's what I was thinking but I wanted to be sure. I don't care much if the key side of things works or not, I'm just more concerned that the alarm still worked, keyless fob stuff, etc...If that's all still good then I'm fine with it, the wife won't mind then.

Not having any issues with ours (actually never had this issue with any 4th gen before) but I wanted to put this in my back pocket just in case. Thanks bud.

the alarm will work but if somebody has a key to start your car that doesnt have the resistor in it they can start it...thats the downside.

But thats what kill switches are for

you're talking to a guy that owns multiple vehicles built before any of us were born. I'm guessing many of his cars don't have the resistor in the key.

That's fine with me, since I can't imagine how anyone would have a key that wanted to steal it since a key still has to match the tumblers to turn it. Most likely thief would bust the column and hot wire it anyway.
So basically it would be just like any other car I have here, starts with a normal key, but it has an alarm that still works.

I'm guessing though that if the alarm went off with this VATS disable trick, it would no longer disable the starter and fuel pump??? It would just be an alarm or alert system at that point??

Well I wasn't going to come out and say it but since you mentioned it

Yeah I'm used to regular keys so the fact that the resistor thingy no longer worked wouldn't bother me in the least.

correct but any thief that's worth his weight in salt would laugh at the vats system.......just talk to anyone that installs remote starts.....they sell all kinds of boxes to defeat the vats system.

That's what I thought, I figured there were ways around it. I never really trusted it was fool proof so when ever we took the car on a trip and it would sit outside overnight, I would just pop the hood and take the fuel pump relay in the motel with me. If they wanted to steal it they would need a hook

On the older cars I run a series of kill switches and/or do other simple things that make it un-startable, but we rarely venture out to an overnight venue with the old cars anymore. Pretty much day trips nowadays.

yep you got it...thats exactly what would happen. The alarm would go off, but the car could still be started. I also agree that the odds of somebody having a key to start your car would be pretty slim, just giving an example of what could happen.

The VATS is junk imo...most of the guy who still run the vats will run a kill switch to the fuel pump anyway lol that shows how much they trust it...
