I just recently performed this fix on my car and it worked, but the security light stays on. Will it go off at some point? I only have the resistor jammed into the back of the clip, I took it out and adjusted so it was in good and tight but the light stays on. Car still starts. I guess if the light doesn't go off I can just cut wires and solder the resistor in. My problem started with a solid security light and the occasion shut off ( the car) right after the first start attempt ( it would always fire up and stay on during the 2nd attempt). Finally the light started to flash and I bypassed the VATS.

if it's done correctly the light shouldn't be on at all.....check your resistance values again to make sure you're right in the middle and make it a more permanent fix. I prefer solder for sure but even taping or using wire nuts would work.

I figured the light should not be on. My keys tested at 9.54k and 9.56k. The two resistors i soldered together in series add up to 9.48k, which should be almost perfect. I will check it again. I had a hard time getting the connectors apart (ign to VAT module), i actually did not get them apart so i just worked in it connected. I guess if i cut the two white wire coming from the ign cylinder i could solder my resistors there, not like that ign cylinder is any good anymore. I do have one more question. i did the inital work on the car on friday so i could drive it home, the car was at my parents house, when i went to work on it again yesterday, i added a switch, the car turned out without the resistor in place ( i tested it out when i could not get the light off). Could that have to do with the sercurity light being stuck on. Like the car was giving me a fw more starts before it wouldnt start again. Sort of like when the ign cylinder was going out?? Does that make sense?

I know what you're asking...kinda. There are a few levels of vats failure.....I honestly don't know all of them. It's not as simple as pass fail though. I do know that if it passes the light will go out immediately. It looks like you have pellet 14.....the median for that pellet is 9530. If it were me ( and while I was doing the work) I would get that resistor set dead on 9530. You would probably be fine with 9480 but keep in mind that there's a possibility it'll could vary outside the range. Also, are you using 5% resistors ( gold band)? If they're silver band there will be a 10% variance in there and if there's no band it'll be 20%. I honestly think most of your trouble is how you have it wired in.....make that more permanent and see what happens.

did you ever figure out what caused this problem and how to fix it? my car does the exact same thing.

Security light stays solid when my car is on, but it has thankfully only stranded me once. I picked up my resistors for this "fix" today from RS, but I'm a little concerned about removing the this part of the theft-deterrent system. How many of you have installed an ignition kill switch? What style switch (lighted or unlighted, rocker or toggle, etc.)? Where did you mount it? Thanks.

I have a 5.3 that im swapping into my car. I took the original harness & turned it into a stand alone harness. Is there a way I can do something like this to to bypass vats and get my engine started without having to send it to a tuner to get removed?

I assume your donor setup is based off of a 5.3 truck/Suv, correct? what year? Either way, those trucks have a different theft deterrent system and the resistor trick doesn't apply. I think there are Bypass modules to eliminate the system, but you might as well just have a tuner do it.

I went ahead and tested my key at the 20k ohm setting and it came with the result 2.96 would a 3.3k resistor work they were the nearest to 2.96 I could find I bought a 1/2 watt 5% tolerance resistor.

looks like you have a #9 on the chart which is 2890-3150 with a median of 3010. That 3300 will put you out of range on that. It make work sometimes but then others it might not. You want to get as close to 3010 as you can. You can put 2 or more in a series if you need to in order to get that resistance value.

Well I took off the kick panel and it seems that someone has already done the bypass as there is a black box where t he connectors should be but I am still having issues any thou ghts?

Try measuring the resistance of the black box and consider replacing it with resistors if you find its out of spec or if you just suspect its bad.

New vats cylinders w/key are available on e-bay from 30-90 bucks with key, just need to know your keys code or ohm value to order the proper one.

So I'm trying to help a friend with this issue on his SS. We can't get it to go though. His key reads 4.4 which isn't on the scale, so I assumed they key got weak and its just sliding under the minimums of the key #11. So he got some resistors and the one he got reads 4.59 which is just above the minimum of 4.56 but it's still not working. What do you guys think?
