Hot center console
My center console gets extremely hot after a couple minutes of driving and I'm thinking this isn't natural. When wearing shorts(like I was today) I can feel the heat radiating on my legs. The console becomes hot to touch and my shifter stick?(not the knob but the stick leading to it) is extremely hot to touch as well. I'm sure the knob would also be hot if it were not coated in leather.
So anyways I'm wondering if anyone would know what could be causing this?
Also on a side note does anyone know what would cause my strut mounts to break so easily just replaced them again and on a test drive I just had on my new springs/shocks it feels like a broke one again

2 things.
How hot is your console mine is hot to the touch where its uncomfortable to touch the radio when the heat is on. hence why the back lights on the buttons don't work the wire are probably melted. thanks GM. I am curious for a reason too.
thee strate mates are prolly shitty or old and dry.Last edited by Hot head; 04-26-2011 at 05:36 AM.

Two things come to mind:
1 - transmission is running hot.
2 - heat shield is gone on the exhaust and the heat from the exhaust is heating up the center console.
Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

Mine gets stupid hot it's like having the heater on full blast all the time. I can feel it blowing in my face while driving and makes the car very warm. In the winter it is not so bad but during these hotter texas months it is almost unbearable.
Someone else had also mentioned that the transmission may be getting too hot is there a way to fix/test for that. I dont have a temp gauge for my transmission...
Where can I look to inspect for this exhaust heat shield?

Other than getting a temp gauge to monitor it...not much really you can do.
Check your transmission fluid level to start. Make sure it is at the proper level. Also make sure the fins on your tranny cooler are clean from debris. Also inspect the fluid when you check the level. Is it clean? Last time you did a transmission flush?

Climb under the car, and inspect the area. It will be pretty obvious if it is missing. I took mine off my car, and I don't experience any heat like mentioned. So I'm guessing it isn't the problem, but it's worth checking.
As 35th stated, check the tranny fluid and cooler.

One other suggestion besides what 35th ANV SS has said. Check the shift boot. If it is cracked or torn it will let in a lot of heat from the tranny as well as increase road noise.
Mine was torn and the overly warm console was why I started to look for it.
Only other way I can figure out to help lower temps from heat soak from the exhuast or tranny is installing Dynamat or Lizard skin under coating. Both will require you to pull all the interior out to install.

Ok great suggestions went out to my car to check and sadly couldnt locate anything . Looked at some pictures to see where the transmission fluid stick should be located and still couldnt find it. Also have no idea where my tranny cooler would be.
Here are some pics I took with my phone if someone could point my in the general direction that would be great.

Tranny cooler would be in the front! Its a smaller radiator that is I believe in front of the engine's radiator. tranny dipstick should towards the back of the engine bay. Take pictures of the engine straight away. not side shots cant see far back enouph
I have an ls1 it should be around the same place. I only check it once before.Last edited by Hot head; 04-26-2011 at 09:52 AM.

Sorry, I can't see pics while I am at work. Work blocks sites such as photobucket, pimpnhost, etc. You'll have to wait for me to get home unless someone else replies beforehand.
