    High RPMs.

Hey guys. I need some help.
For the last few days my car Bern acting funny.
When I'm driving and I get to stop the car. When I hit the clutch. The RPMs stay high on 1500 rpms. After few seconds it goes down slowly to normal.
And some times go really low aroun 300 rpms seems like it's gonna turn off but then goes back to normal again.
And the gas mileage is bad. Since that is happening.

I cleaned the mass air sensor.
I checked for vacuum leaks. Nothing visible.
I dnt heard any noise of vacuum leak.
    No engine codes.
    What could it be?

I would say 02 sensors but that would throw a code. MAF might be on its way out

I know MAFs don't always throw codes when they are garbage (Seen it first hand)

I thought it could be the MAF.
How can I make sure that's the problem?

O2 sensor should throw a code right ?

Air leak after the MAF, vacuum leak, dirty throttle body and/or idle air control valve. All possibilities.

Tb is cleaned. Put it 500 miles ago.
    It's ported.
No leaks between the tb and lid.
Nothing visual on the vacuum hoses.

When I put the ported tb. Everithing was fine.
It started doing this bout 40 miles ago

Dumb question. Could that problem be related to the stering pump?
I noticed right now that is making noise.
When I turns the steering wheel the rpms go higher than usual

It might be on it's way out and putting strain on the motor!!

FYI, if you need p/s fluid, our cars use tranny fluid, NOT p/s fluid in the p/s system

The IAC valve is located on the driver side of the throttle body. I have not had a problem with ours, so I am uncertain of the diagnostic procedure. I understand that they can get gummed up though and cleaning the sensor with a spray throttle body or MAF cleaner (preferred as it does not leave any residue) may alleviate the problem. Do you run a K&N or similar type air filter?

uummmmm....no. our cars (f-bodies) use p/steering fluid. The GTOs might use ATF though

Are you sure Cutlass? I was sure that GM uses ATF in pretty much all of their p/s units.
Either way it should say on the p/s resivior cap.

I don't use carb cleaner on FI engines. Last time I used it I flood it and it took forever to start.

Yep, I'm sure. Ford is the one that uses ATF in there power steering systems. Almost all GM vehicles use power steering fluid with a few exceptions like the Cadillac Catera and the GTO (I think)....those are the only 2 I can think of that use ATF.
