    help with temperature switch

    would a broken temperature switch, the one that goes on the side of the header on the driver side, affect the car in traing to start or the car shutting off? my car is a 1998 trans am

    If the sensor wiring was damaged and shorting out then it could affect the starting but if your temp sensor is bad, it shouldn't do that.

    is your temp gauge going nuts? that is a good sign if your sensor is jacking up. what exactly are your symptoms?

    well the gauge is completly dead.. it dosent mark temperature.. and when i start the car it throughs black smoke.. i believe the car is running rich.. i was wondering if is the temperature switch causing this..

    Are you referring to the coolant temp sensor? It would cause the car to run bad but after a while the car should steady out. If i recall the temp sensor only affects the way the car runs for a few minutes after startup.
    I would try a new sensor, easy to replace and cheap
    You may also have a damaged pigtail or a short in your harness
