Have I been short shifting ?

Ok this is a question that I have to ask no matter how stupid it makes me feel. With my 2002 Stock motor Z28 (M6) should I be shifting at 5500 or 6000 ? I have been thinking 5500 since that is where the red starts but I have been seeing some hints that 6000 is the better shift point. I know my car feels like it could go up further I have just been worried about breaking anything, after hearing so many stories.

I actually heard somewhere on here that peak (stock hp) is in the 5200-5300 range, so that gives me good reason to stay away from the 6k mark. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

My mostly stock 94 did not really like going up much past 5700. On that car I usually short shifted it some just because it started to push upwards a little slower. That car had a few miles on it though and towards the end was not running that great. The LS1 on the other hand shows no sign of running out of power, I just have been scared of bending or breaking something expensive. That and the scary red lines start at 5500.

Yeah, I noticed especially in second and third, it feels like you could hold the gas down and it would accelerate forever. With it floored it is kind of hard to target a number like 5800 though. I just play it like the field goal kicking meter on madden. Try to push the clutch when the arrow is somewhere in the orange area.

6k for sure, but the best way is to take it to a track and see which works better

Well next time I go to the track she should have LTs, full TD exhaust, and a tune. So if she wanted to go to 6 before she really should now. The red lines on the tach were just a little scary and I wanted to make sure nothing was going to break. Especially since this is my only car, and I want to keep it that way for a while.

Redline is at 6,200, the lines before it are to warn you that you are getting close
