and why would you run 10w-30 when it calls for 5w-30? there is basically no difference but still. the only reason to run 10w is if its in cold climates cuz its more of an all season oil.
Uhh, you mean 5W-- is more for cold weather, not 10W--.

And I have not heard one good reason to run 10W30 instead of 5W30, for a stock engine. Lubes better on cold start up, 5W30 does.

Penzoil Platinum send your oil analysis off and one day you will learn. Penzoil Platinum = better shear rate than Mobile 1.

I feel the weight of the oil all depends on your oil pressure, at a given driving condition.
Older, loose engines may need a heavier oil. Engines that run at a steady low temp may need a single weight oil (such as marine engines).

Synthetic is good for a clean engine. Detergent oil is good for a dirty engine with more frequent oil changes.

Every engine is different. Use a pressure guage, and like another post; ask the previous owner what they used for oil, and how frequen they changed it..

If you change/add your own oil; you can get very familiar of how your oil holds-up to your driving conditions.

As far as oil filters, I've usually had great experience with FRAM and other brand names. I like the FRAM with the hand grip and heavy casing.

My worst experience with an oil filter was a more expensive brand. My little 78' 2.0 BMW blew the crap out of the oil filter when the engine oil was below operating temp. Literally, blew the darned thing apart on the inside, and blew the gasket on the outside. GREAT MOTOR! Over 210K on it, and I can still blow holes through expensive oil filters (I love that little car, 0-60 in two shits..)).

Anyways, go for an oil filter with the heavy casing, and oil that meets your needs ).

Anyone have any proof that Mobil 1 is so great??

Those using it are basicly wasting money.
Won't hurt anything as it is a decent oil, but isn't working as well as another oil that is $1 less a quart.

Maybe way below zero, but for all around use 10w-30 is also listed in your manual.

uggh! Let's be honest...EVERY oil manufacturer is going to tell you their oil is THE best. Are they going to really tell you otherwise. I say stick with the synthetic brand that's the cheapest. Lets face it...most car engines nowadays will last 200,000 miles or more as long as you keep up with basic maintenance and don't rag on them too much. It's the parts AROUND the engine that always skrew you over (water pumps, alternators, starters, etc.).

ok so i go to get my oil changed today and the tech goes "are you really sure you want to put that crap into your car?" and he goes on and on about how castrol syntec is the best oil on the market. he also said i should not be using 10w30 because the car recommends 5w30

Look at that, and then please tell me how it's not applicable to Royal Purple in LS1 engines.
