First oil change - best oil to use?
well its that time for my first oil change since i bought the car and im not sure if i should go with synthetic. i read somewhere that synthetic oil is so thin that it causes leaks.

you should ask the previous owner or dealer what they used to put in it to make sure but usually
Mobil-1 5w-30 is fine and its what almost everyone uses.

gm recommends the ls1's run mobil 1. mobil is fantastic oil. personaly i think its one of the best. if you wanna go top of line, i would recommend ams oil, but thats only available through dealers and maybe the internet. how many miles are on your car? and if youre worried about leaks, thats usually only a problem on high mileage cars. obviously thats due to worn gaskets, not the type of oil. synthetic is thinner because it more refined and lubricates better, however on high mileage cars its easier for the oil to seep out of the gaskets. which is why high mileage oil is the exact opposite of synthetic. your car will run the exact same on regular 49 cent oil, the only real difference is how long the interior of you engine will last. but basiacally any name brand sythetic will be fine.

i have heard good and bad about royal purple. summit racing has pulled if from their shelves due to compliants and lack of sales. i would just play it safe and stick with mobil.

Used Oil Analysis
Having the oil looked over after it has been used.
Mobil 1 is an okay oil...but NOT worth the money. Just because GM used it as a factory fill means nothing except that Mobil paid GM for that right.
Same goes for Quaker State and Ferrari.
Royal Purple is crap.
Amsoil and Pennzoil Platinum are the two top oils right now.
Things change...a few years ago Mobil was a top oil.

I drive airboats. We have chevy 454's on all of our airboats and we use Mobil 1. Those things run practically all day 24/7. No problems.
Make mine Mobil!

Everytime you start the car??
You need to reset it.
Fram filters have been known to have issues falling apart. Meaning the filter element could possibly find its way into the motor.
Royal Purple shears...meaning it doesn't protect as well.
Most of the time, people change their oil at 3K miles anyways, so it really doesn't matter AS MUCH. But, in that case....why spend the extra coin on the Mobil 1 or Amsoil or Royal Purple???
Pennzoil Platinum = $4 a quart
