    Engine compartment cooling

Is anyone familiar with engine compartment cooling. I have a Monte Carlo and am concerned with excess heat in the compartment with the LS7 I put in it. Can compartments be vented and how. Through the fender wells - are there aftermarket products to assist me here?

Some will "flute" their hood. "Flute" as in vents like on the old Vegas. Lets the heat out and keeps the engine happy. Others go the cowl hood route. You could go with either of these or go with a dual electric fan setup. Other folks will add to this.

I like the vented hood idea like the Vegas you mentioned - that idea I will research, thanks - by the way how is the rain kept out? At this point I would rather not spend the money on another hood that is cowled. But I still wonder if there is a fenderwell solution

Maybe side vents from a 79 T/A or vents from a GNX?

Cammed Goat: I found some hood vents on ebay for a 68/69 SS Camaro. They are an exact replica in detail and are polished billet aluminum and they are perfect. Look good and will do exactly what I want them to do and that is vent hot air up and out of the engine compartment. Now all I have to do is cut the slots and fit them - and buy them too of course. Great idea thanks for you help. Even found the answer to my rain question. I guess hood vents are panned to keep the rain out of the engine compartment.

My z34 has funtioning hood vents from the factory. You'd be amazed when both fans are running how much hot air gets evacuated. They have a channeled pan to divert rain water too.

Smittro: On your Z-34 are the vents incorporated into the hood or are they separate pieces that bolt on?

You can remove the cowl seal and radiator support seal (if so equipped) to allow additional airflow through the engine compartment. Just be sure that removing the radiator support seal does not affect the volume of air that is forced through the radiator.

Yes they are bolted into a recess in the hood. Also the vent grills themselves are made of metal (pot metal) that can't take a weld, but metal all the same..

If/when you get working on the hood, post pics. Nice to see you are keeping with the SS theme. Never seen a Monte with Camaro SS hood vents. I wanna see them tho. Gonna look real nice.

I have about 400 pix now showing all my progress; the hoods vents will eventually get taken but it probably will be the last thing I do. This project is already into it's 15th month and soon to be completed - working out the bugs. Trying to prevent fuel cavatation at the pump now - researching coolers by Dana currently. And trying to lower my oil temp - but I don't have room for another cooler anywhere in the engine compartment. Another dilemma to overcome. If it isn't one thing its another.

Cammed Goat: Just ordered those vents today. I am getting them in a black satin/machine anodized finish to match my black flush hood latches. Want to keep the same color scheme. Black on Silver. When those are installed I will definitely have pix to post. I don't know how but the individual who is doing my pictorial, I will ask him to do it for me. And from what Smittro mentioned I should be able to vent alot of my engine compartment heat which will be very good.
