difference between 01/02 Z28 and SS
I had an 02 SS, but I had to sell it two years ago. I am looking around for another one but my price range is under 12k. Most of the ls1's with low mileage, under 12 grand are z28's. I can't quite remeber what the difference in performance and upgrades the ss's had over the z28's. please let me know anything you can think of.

There were a few options availible, for example, Hood, exhaust, rims, badges, suspension. The z28 was rated at like 310 hp from the factory and the ss was rated at 325 hp from the factory.
2001 SS, Its not the car its the Driver that matters....

They have the same hp despite the factory ratings...SS is mainly a appearance/suspension package. The gearing in a auto can be 2.73's in a z28 though so get one with the optional 3.23's if you're not doing a gear swap anytime soon...all the sticks have 3.42's.
You might be able to find another SS that's a few years older for that price...you can always put a ls6 manifold on it if that's the only reason you want a 01/02.

well other than the ls6 manifold, are there any other differences between 98-00 and 01-02? I am kicking my self for letting my SS go and for these dumb questions that I knew before.

The 98's are a less desirable car. The block and computers are different. The later models have bigger oil passages in the back of the block and windows cut into the mains. I own a 98 and have had no problems with it but owning a 99 and up seems to be the way to go.

New-the SS cost like $5000 more. In my opinion you can buy alot of speed stuff for that. I own a Z-28, bought it new, obviously I'm biased.

01/02's have some better parts including things like better rod bolts, better oiling system, better intake, etc. As for the Z28 vs. SS debate...the slightly cooler intake temps and slightly free-er breathing exhaust system give the SS a slight advantage in stock form. But if you plan on getting a lid and catback anyway, the Z28 will be just as much bang for a much better buck. It's more personal preference. So, what do you want - looks or speed?

get an 01-02 Z28 and you will be plenty happy... with 1-2 mods you will be past a stock SS anyway so there is no need to worry about it.

The HP differnce between the SS and Z28 is negligible. If you are going to keep the car mostly stock, get the SS. If you are going to mod it to death, save the money and get the Z28.

yeah I think I am going to look for a z28 and keep my fingers crossed for the rigt ss to pop up. I just really like the looks of the ss over the z28, but as long as I get another ls1 I will be happy. My previous SS was running 13 flat @108 with a lid, cutout, slpmaf and some other small bolt ons. Thanks for all of your opinions.

you can get a hood/spoiler/rims for under 1500. Just a thought.

Pewter- '99 Z28 M6
I thought about getting the spoiler, but that was about it. I still think the SS spoiler is the nicest, cleanest spoiler available for Z28's. If I get a hood, I want a pin on with like a 3" cowl. I don't want the SS hood. I don't want my Z28 to look like an SS at all. If I wanted an SS, I would have bought an SS. Even if I get the spoiler, I am gonna leave the Z28 badges on it, don't want to be a POSER. If there was a spoiler as nice as the SS one, I would buy it instead.
SS's are nice, but getting all that SS crap is kinda like buying a GT and slapping Cobra stuff on it.
Just my opinion, that and 98 cents might get me a dollar cup of coffee.
