Laminar airflow is a great theory, and one that I would be willing to accept with some evidence behind it. However, his postulations about air getting by unmeasured make no sense as the screen doesn't channel air like a funnel to the sensor. Air going by at the bottom of the orfice versus closer to the center will be the same, screened or not. The ported MAF is another topic altogether... Thank you for posting something informative and constructively adding to the discussion.
Well think of it this way.......the screen does have an affect on the airflow does it not? Of course it does....it "straightens" it out.....well guess what...the MAF sensor is calibrated to read the "straight" air and then it "computes" the air that passes over it making the assumption the screen is in.....now when you take the screen out...the air is no longer "straight" and the MAF is still calibrated to read as if it was "straight" therefore it is going to be inaccurate and give inaccurate readings to the ECM....thus the error codes that many folks get that take their screens out....
So yes...the MAF sensor does not read nor measure every spec of air that flows through the intake tract....it reads only a small portion.....and makes calculations from there based on the airflow that a screened MAF would have....get it?

Sounds good. Thanks for posting. I'm guessing that the later un-screened MAFs have a differnent sensor that can read non-straightened air-flow?

Correct since they are manufactured that way they are calibrated with no screen....So yes the table values are = to the present flow with NO screen.

So would you have to get one of the new unscreened MAF's or can ours be retuned when the screen is removed?
    Vote for Pedro.

Yours can be retuned or the table value redone by a experienced tuner with the right software.

You can remove it and retune the car, which is what I was talking about in the beginning.

I remmember reading on the MAF on an ls1 performance book and it stated that the screen was there for straightning the airflow. But it was only effective on trucks where the MAF sits too far from the intake witch the air does need to be "straightned". On the F bodies the MAF is so close to the intake that it makes no diffrence. I left the screen on my 5.3 shortbed and removed it from my camaro. No problems so far.

Think about that for a second here....if I had a inlet that was 4' long and one that was 1' long. Your telling me the air velocity would be different in a IC engine? How does that work?
I slept through Latin but not Physics.
