damn security light
okay ive been having this problem for a couple months. my security light randomly will come on whether im driving or i go to start the car. it sucks becasue it doesnt let me start the car for 3 minutes until it shuts off. id say about half the time i start the car it will turn on, sometimes a few times in a row. i dont want to bother bringing it to the gm dealer becasue they told me it will cost $90 just to tell me whats wrong. any help? thanks

You could get the key pelet value and bypass vats/passkey with a resistor, probably the small wires on the lock cyl broken/intermitent and not recognizing the key - http://shbox.com/1/vats_bypass.jpg gives you an idea what I'm talking about.

do a search on here for vats. Easy fix. I bypassed mine over the summer and it only takes a few minutes to do. It'll cost you a couple bucks for a resistor.

Even before you do that clean off the contacts of the VAT pellet with some rubbing alcohol, to remove any finger oils. Now get a pencil with a clean eraser (or just a good drafting ink eraser) and clean both sides of the contacts on the pellet. Don't blow the eraser "dust" off so a little remains then put it in and out of the ignition several times. Repeat this a couple of times.
Ive fixed quite a few this way and it's usually a long lasting repair.

how do i find my key pallet resistance?

use an ohm meter and touch the leads to each side of the pellet and that'll give you an ohm reading. If you don't have one and don't know anyone that does you can buy a multimeter at radioshack for about $10 or so. After you do that then just buy a resistor that gets you into that range and splice it in place on the key side of the connector and plug the connector back in. I had a hard time finding 1 resistor that put me in my range so I used 2 in a series. Here's a link with a bunch of good info on the subject along with pellet ranges.
