Cutting off Muffler
hey i heard my buddies Camaro with his exhaust cut just before his muffler and it sounds pretty sick but i heard that you lose alot of back pressure and power if you do that...is it true?

2002 Z28 A4 NBM- Sadly now demodded :(
No, it's not true. If it was then dragsters wouldn't use zoomie type headers.
Did he cut the exhaust or put a cut out on it? I had a cut out til I did the true duals on the 02.
Forgot to add:
I see this getting moved to a tech section.......
An Preston, I do play Powerball at work and haven't won a dime!

Yeah i dont see how this would hurt performance any. Guys use cut outs and im sure the cats still provide a lot of back-pressure.
But from what ive seen back pressure isnt necessary, you want to be as close to free flowing as possible, i mean, isnt that the point of headers and full exhuasts?

youn would probly loose a little TQ down low but you would gain HP. I would just get cut-outs best of both worlds.

it will be pretty loud, you would also gain some hp and tq (5+hp and 8+tq) on a relativly stock car, the more mods the more hp and tq you would gain. 67Camaro said it perfect, all mufflers do is what its titled to do which is muffle the sound or make it quiter, which also makes you lose performence.

i just had my AC compressor replaced. the mechanic had to full my exhaust to get to it, and apparently only re-attached it finger tight. I showed up early to pick it up, i guess i rushed him. So where my Y-pipe connects to my manifolds is pretty loose, sounds terrible.
I should prob add that since the pipes are still lined up, i couldnt tell a difference in sound until i got out to the highway and got on the throttle, by then i just figured id fix it at home

From my personal experience, when I removed my muffler I lost my low-end.

free flow isn't always best. why there are variable induction cars like VTEC or mazda's VRIS and why porsche uses variable exhaust. (opens up more with rpm with what seems to be something similar to throttle body.) less flow is better for partial throttle and low rpms. not sure why but it is, for torque.
now if you were to run just headers, yes you would loose power but not from just the muffler, i would assume. your cats are still giving plenty of backpressure and many people run bullet mufflers and don't complain.
