    Coil packs

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on or has ever changed the coil packs on a 98-02 camaro ls1, and if any of you have how hard is it?

piece of cake to do but unless you have a bad one I wouldn't waste the money on aftermarket stuff. The stock coils in these cars are awesome combined with really short plug wires. No need to worry about the coils.

I found some GM high perfromance coils thought that might give me a little more spark.

Correct. Stock coils or... upgraded coils are the truck coils.

None of them last forever. Strange that some suddenly die while others from the same set last years longer. I had 2 stockers go out in one month after several years. I replaced all 8 with MSDs, and about 2 1/2 years later one of them died. I replaced it with a new one, while the other 7 are still going strong.

On my wife's DD, a stocker died a few months ago and she wanted the "hot rod" looking red ones like on my SS -- so I "had" to get a set of MSDs for hers, too! I did so gladly, since I've spent much more in the past to keep her happy. So, in this case, it was money well spent.

That's the lovely world of electronics. They can last for years or die tomorrow. Usually without any warning either.

Stock coils will support up to as much as 1500 hp if you shorten the plug gaps to about .020

Nothing wrong with MSD stuff. One of the best in the business.
Been using their boxes and distributors for years on several cars and never once had a failure. I used the digital 7 box on the race car, and still use the digitial 6 box on the chevelle, and use the old tried and true 6AL boxes on 2 other cars. My father uses the 6AL box as well. They are easy to trouble shoot if there is a problem. My father suspected his box was bad,,,and MSD checked it out for free and sent it back,,,it had no issues. Turned out to be a bad ground. They have great tech service.

As a matter of fact,,,,most ignition problems can be traced back to a bad ground.

If I wanted "cool red" coils, I'd get an $8 can of Krylon.

    Ill take some.

BTW. I would suggest painting the coils if you like the red look.

I do believe our sponsor will suggest not powdercoating due to heat.
