    Cleaning my M.A.F.

My 99 T/a had been getting horrendously bad gas mileage recently (10-12mpg in city) a customer of mine who works for a hipo LS1 modding shop suggested I pull out my maf and clean it with some carb cleaner. Just wanted a second opinion on if this was good advice before I go and do it, and if it is if anyone has a picture by picture of working back to the maf so I don't screw anything up.

    Thanks in advance everyone

I wouldn't use carb cleaner...go to radio shack and get some contact cleaner. You want to use a cleaner that doesn't leave a residue...and don't touch the filaments in the maf.

Agreed. Carb cleaner will strip off the clearcoat coating in the Throttle body/MAF (if its metal), plus it could damage the sensors inside.

First thing I would do it clean out the engine and give it a tuneup. Buy a can of Seafoam, and feed it through the brake booster vacuum line with the car idling. It will clean out the combustion chambers and make a ton of dirty smoke come out of the exhaust. Also run a bottle of Chevron Techron Fuel Injection cleaner through the tank. Then change the oil (Mobil 1 Synthetic with AC Delco oil filter), plugs (AC Delco or NKG), fuel filter, and air filter (it its dirty).

If you're still getting terrible fuel economy after that, then theres something more serious wrong with your car.

that's really not horrendously bad gas mileage for the city, it's normal if you're having fun around town to get it that low. dont clean the maf with anything, if it is dirty and there is corrision get a new one. you could also try flushing the engine with a good cleaner, changing the fuel filter, checking the plugs, get a tune, clean the injectors, air filter, ect.

10 years ago no problem ... but like everything else now, there are varieties, isopropol or rubbing alcohol can now come scented ... sometimes it's colored.

You want the pure clear stuff.
