Chasing a vibration
Hey guys, hadn't posted here in a while so I figure I'll probe your brains here for a second lol! I have a 02 SS with the normal bolt-ons and a 226 cam and I have a pulsating vibration between 1700ish and 2000 rpm from something. It seems to be more consistant through the steering wheel and you can hear the turn signal switch vibing with it. It does in in neutral or in every gear that happens to be in that rpm zone. I've changed my motor mounts (second set of prothanes) checked rack bolts, just swapped by chattery spec 3 for a ls7 with the ls2 flywheel and it still vibrates and I do have the stock trans mount. Only thing I have left is my asp underdrive which dosent seem to move any when the car is running. I'm at a loss right now trying to figure this out . Any ideas guys?

I'm not exactly sure it started I think when I put my mounts in. But I changed them with a new set of prothanes. The car made 407 cam a couple weeks ago only so I doubt it has a weak coil pack but I guess thats a possibility, I changed the plugs in it about 3k miles ago. I'd think it would throw a code if it was the crank sensor, but I'll check into that too.

Im going to try the cps, I have a random backfire at startup (only about once every two weeks) and after my mount install I pulled a couple of the wires to the crank sensor and had to splice in a new pigtail for it.

Checking it in the morning and going to swap the sensor just incase. It ran with the stock wiring and done the same thing but the connector was loose in the cps and the car would shut down every now and then. Havent had that problem with the new pigtail and its been on there for 6 months or so.

those mounts themselves will transfer more vibration into the car.

Yeah I know they'd do it but I've put mounts in countless friends cars with built motors and much larger cams than I have and they have no such vibration. I understand a little shake at startup though.

well, one thing I would check is that pulley. Countless people have had those work their way off. Might not hurt to get under there and inspect it well to make sure it's not working it's way off.

Just check all the wiring and swapped crank position sensors and still the same thing. The crank pulley bolt is VERY tight and doesent seem to shimmy or move at all when the car is running. I guess I could always try putting the stock pulley on therre and keeping my fingers crossed.

Finally got it figured out. It ended up being my asp underdrive
I stuck a stock pulley on and its completely smooth and runs great, thats a big weight off my chest!
Thanks for all the help too guys!!

Yeah I swear I want another underdrive, but this one has left a bad taste in my mouth. Been looking at the powerbonds and slps.

I had a feeling it was your pulley as well. I have a mild cam in my car and my car rocks but doesn't vibrate as I have the stock pulley. I have heard mixed reviews regarding underdrive pulleys. If it's a solid aluminum/steel pulley, you are going to have vibrations.

Thats exactly what I'm afraid of, I might just stick with stock for now. I don't feel any difference either.

Then leave well enough alone and leave the stocker in there.

who put the pulley on and what bolt was used? 9 times out of 10 it's an install issue where someone didn't torque it properly. If I remember correctly the ARP bolt gets torqued to 240 which is a shit ton. I have a feeling most people just zip it up on there with an impact and call it a day which leaves them open to have it start working it's way back off. Might try to re-install it and make sure it's torqued properly.

We didnt have a torque wrench that went that high but we used a 4 ft breaker bar and two guys to tighten it down so it should have been close. I'm going to get my hands on a torque wrench though and we may try it again. The first time I used a stock bolt, which we did torque correctly and it still done it then. I put the arp in when I done the cam swap.
