    catch can/ls6 valley tray

i just got my catch can in from ws6 store. now, can someone give me a link to a step by step install of the catch can, or write me one. keep in mind i am a rookie with this so be specific please. also, this ls6 valley i keep hearing about, does it truely work that well? how much is it, where can i get one, and how hard is the install of that, or is it one of those things that may be worth bringing to a mechanic?

all help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

I order these from GMPartsDirect.com (sponsor and the cheapest vendor that has these parts. Side note I had to wait an extra week for the VCT, but worth the wait)

Here are the part numbers you will need

LS6 Valley Cover Tray (VCT) - Part Number 12577927 COVER Cost $54.65

I suggest getting these two because you have to remove them and they are over 10 yrs old, doesn’t hurt to replace ‘em while you’re here.
99'-02' Knock Sensor - Part Number 12589867 SENSOR Cost $37.50 (you need 2)
99'-02' Knock Wire Harness - Part Number 12601822 WIRE Cost $28.65

Also plan on needing an OPSU (Oil Pressure Sending Unit). They become brittle and break easy when you remove the intake for the first time. It is located behind the intake on the drivers side.

Don't forget Anti-seize for when you tighten the bolts back down..

Here is a good how to thread on how to do the VCT.

    Catch Can:

This has pics of both the LS6 VCT & Catch can installed:

For installing the can I need to know what you plan on doing I/O to explain it. Meaning there is one way if you keep the crappy PCV system or another if you go the LS6VCT route.

Now for the reason for doing this - the PCV that GM installed on our cars is Over time it leaks oil and vacuum pressure. The LS6 VCT eliminates the hose that goes around the intake and internalizes it into the new VCT. It also reroutes the out let tube to the front of the motor on the passenger side of the TB.

Be warn you will need to do some cutting on the block to remove a 1/2" by 3/4" piece of aluminum I/O to fit the new VCT. That is explained in the how to thread.

I've done it an I am no master mechanic. It took me about 3-4 hrs and that was because I took my time and made sure what I was doing before I did it.

Not always. I have the LS6 valley and got just as much oil in the intake as before. Using it coupled with a catch can now. I say skip it.

Did you run a hose direct from the VCT outlet tube to the intake? If so that is why. The LS6 VCT has a built in PCV on the bottom which means it still will let some oil get by. The catch can purpose is to help stop it.

The LS6 VCT also helps eliminate the vacuum leaks caused by this:

The VCT mod gets rid of all of this:

This is what it looks like finished.

VCT cost $55 + another $20 for shipping vs PCV hose $ (Pcv valve, 5.7l, pipe assy w/valve) Normal cost $137.41 GMPartsDirect Price $81.46 + shipping ($20)

It took me about 4 hrs to do. Not hard, something you can do in your garage easy. Several of us have recently done this in the last 2 months.

if you get to a spot you don't know what to do just ask me, no problem.

Also there is a socket for the OPSU. Cost me $10 at O'Reillys. I have only used it twice but worth the it.

You don't have to remove the OPSU but if you break it by accident...

I think they are the only 2 places that you can get them. My local Dealer said no way it would work. I took it back the following week after just to show him.

I ran the looped hose/pcv that came with it. Same set up the LS6 ZO6 had. This was supposed to stop oil getting by but instead was a waste of money cause it did nothing. The catch can would help stop oil getting by with the LS1 pcv set up.

It should be at least a little better with the LS6 setup since the valley is a less oily place then the valve cover.

It wasn't, and mine wasn't the only one. Many others had the same results, others have better results. Personally I wouldn't bother on a "it may work" possibility. From someone who has done this mod I say skip it. My catch can is keeping my intake dry, not my LS6 valley. Waste of money.
