    cat question

Ok I have a 2000 WS6 and my cats are bad. I need to know if i should replace them, or just cut em off and weld pipe in there, my exhaust shop will do it for free if they can keep the cats. I'm wanting my exhaust to get pretty loud and i dont have to worry about emissions. I will be doing lt's in the future, but i dont have the cash right now, so i need an alternative. thanks.

let em go if they'll do it for free, especially if no emissions and you want it loud anyway

yeah the cats act almost like a resonator, you will gain some noise and a new exhaust smell without cats.

Just one question: how much will they charge you if you just kept the cats?

Yeah, you should definitely find out what price they'd charge if you were to pay out of pocket. It might not be that much. Also, since you said that your cats were bad, I'm guessing the reason why they want them is because of what's in them: platinum and other precious metals. Due to the increase in price for precious metals, many people have been selling any cats they can find, because they are bringing some good money.

So, you should see what they charge if you payed for it, and find out how much your cats are worth as scrap metal (the money for the cats might be enough to pay for the shop's work AND leave you with a little money left over as pure profit!).

    Taken from Wikipedia:

"Due to the exterior location and the use of valuable precious metals including platinum, palladium, and rhodium, converters are a target for thieves. The problem is especially common among late-model Toyota trucks and SUVs, due to their high ground clearance and easily-removed bolt-on catalytic converters. Welded-in converters are also at risk of theft from SUVs and trucks, as they can be easily removed with a battery powered reciprocating saw. The saw removal of the converter can often inadvertently damage the carís wiring or fuel line resulting in dangerous consequences. Rises in metal costs inside the United States during recent years have led to a large increase in theft incidents of the converter, encouraged in part by a resale price for converters that approaches two hundred dollars."

how many miles do you have . . . they may still be under warranty . . . gm extended the waranty on the cats. may be able to get it done for free and keep the old cats.

Depends on the price of the metal at the given time. I think 60-100 bucks for the pair seems pretty good nowadays.

As for the shop there is around 5 here and everyone is really iffy about cats. Emissions isnt enforced here but it is with the shops. Most wont touch catless vehicles or remove the cats unless its shady or after hours. If you can have it done like that I suggest doing it.

Just my .02 cents about muffler shops in KY

the reason most shops won't remove cats or other emmisions components is that nomatter state or county laws, they can still face a $10,000 fine by the feds..... if you find a shop that will do it for you do them a favor and don't post the shop's name in public forum

Gut 'em and put the 'guts' in a container. Then you'll have the 'stuff' to sell later and you won't need to buy or fabricate replacement pipes.
