Silver- 99 Trans Am
cat finally went at 149K
hey everyone. my 99 trans am is throwing a code p0420 which basically means that I need a new cat. figured this would happen sooner or later. I had the other side replaced when I first got the car. is this something that I can do or will I need to have a shop do it. the one that I got before I just had a welding shop weld it in for me but the drivers side looks like it actually bolts into the manifold. is there a direct replacement or can I just go get another one and have my welder wled it in place for me again? Thanks
Chris

HI, I just replaced my drivers side cat, It had a crack in the neck of the converter, It had a tapping sound and threw me a PO137 code. I shopped around all over, the cheapest dealer part was $420 and online i found it for $237.89 Its made by Eastern....The only draw back is you have to buy 2 bolts/washers/lockwashers/nuts,for the aft side, you cant use the original hardware. costed about $3, which i got from home depot. It comes with a gasket as well. I left you the links for the place i bought it from (covertergeeks.com), and also you can do the research from several other sites which i left the links from as well. I went thur all the links and they all wanted the same price of $259. A while back i also had the code po420 and replaced my passenger side cat. I bought it from the dealer and it was also a bolt on. I wish i would have done more reserch before buying from the dealer. Hope this helps.. R.

Oh ya, forgot to mention I broke 203,000 miles and car runs great. never been wrecked and had my 1st clutch put in a few months ago. I drove it around the United states for 12 days.. Drove from Fort Worth to denver to utah, to reno, to vegas and home and did great. I was a bit nervous driving thru the desert though.. lol

Ya , i got the same letter as well, but it does stipulate if your car is under a certin milage. I believe it was 120k miles. I threw mine away since i was at 196k at the time.. Was there a change in the details of the letter sent to you by GM?
