Cant get my steering shaft to fit

I just replaced my motor and I was putting everything back and it was all going pretty smooth until I went to connect the steering shaft at he bottom on the steering box. I took it loose at the top and slid it down as far as it would go and it looks like it still needs about 3/4" until I can get the bolt back in. Am I not holding my mouth right or something. The car is still up in the air but I dont see why it wouldnt line back up. Any help would be appreciated because this is getting on my freaking nerves but I love it.
