is the compressor running? I will think not because it was empty. It should go down once the compressor kicks in. I'm sure some of our A/C tech guys will give you more input. Those gauges get messed up easily too.

JEBUS!! Because you're filling it in the wrong spot!! You're lucky it did'nt rupture the can!!

You need to fill it from the low pressure side @ the fitting on the hose..

I believe that port in your pic is threaded.. The fitting on the guage is an r134 input type "snap" fitting.. There will be a male snap fitting on the low pressure side with a baby blue cap on it,,, could even be threaded too.. Your guage kit should have come with adapters for various styles of systems..

You can't install the fitting incorrectly. R-134 systems only have on set of fittings: One specific high and one specific low fitting.
The high pressure is probably caused by air in the system. The system needs to be at a high vacuum before recharging. Any air/moisture in the system will cause the pressures to run high and the system to not really work well. The moisture in the air will quickly deteriorate the the system from the inside.
So either go buy a vacuum pump for AC, or spend the $75 to $150 to have the system properly recharged by a professional.
