    Question Best Build?

    Howdy Camarofolk

So I'm in a tuning/dyno class at my school for the next three months and we are building a 1999 Z28 this semester and we're at a dead place because no one can agree on a good build that is attainable within the time period we have (and we have some 'tard wanting to put a Mustang 4.6 in it?). It will be a track/dyno only car (it's a donor car from GM since it fell off a truck and cannot be registered/titled) and we want to get as much out of it as possible - the school is paying for all parts so the possibilities are endless. We're starting next week after we replace a lifter tonight.

So my question is: what kind of build is everyone running and what kind of HP/torque are you pushing? I want to collect some ideas!

    Thanks

    Is the car stock?
Do you have to use the stock motor?
What is the goal for the track?
You will need to replace the rear with a 9" or a 12 bolt to really race if you are going that far.
    Manual or Auto?
    N/a, FI, or nitrous?
    etc. etc. etc.
    need more info

Otherwise you'll get a jackas saying drop the motor out and put a ls9 in it

Stock 5.7 engine - was built then torn down by last year's class, they messed up the engine, it's been rebuilt to stock since then (not the best rebuild since we have to tear in to fix lifters)
    We're wanting 10.5-11.5 car, havn't decided yet.
We are planning on replacing the rear
It's an auto, we have a wet nitrous kit to put on it already
It's been only programmed with aftermarket exhaust ... we're planning new exhaust with headers, CAI of some sort, full tune, nitrous after we reprogram the stock tables back in to start "fresh"
That's about as far as we got thus far.

Ok well now you have something to go off of.
So the easiest way to bump compression is to put on a set of ported 5.3 heads.
If you do deciede to change the heads have you considered a cam swap?
you are going to want a converter in the tranny for sure
Aftermarket exhaust is a must the stock y pipe is a joke
CAI just get a lid and call it a day

oh i'm taking pics. right now, it's nothin impressive ... it's a pewter z28 with a donut on it haha. it had a torque converter bolt backing out so we put that back in, the exhaust brackets were all broken and it has one clogged injector and a lifter knock on #7 (which the last two issues will be fixed tonight, we did the other two last night). i'll start taking pics of progress tonight. we have 4 hours a night, 4 nights a week until mid december to do this, so i think we can build something pretty awesome.

I am soo jealous of the knowledge and fun you guys are going to have. That is a lot of time if you use it wisely and don't dick around.

Any way to order some extra parts and send them our way? lol

If just using H/C/I and staying naturally aspirated, I would go for AFR 205CC/FAST and a radical cam. LS6 intake will be the bottle neck with H/C/I set-up. Or at least I have read and heard this.

If going the forced induction route, the flow on the heads won't be as critical as the CCs. More CCs the better.

    I would do a 383, some trickflow 215cc heads milled down to an 11.5-1 compression and a big 250/250 on a 111lsa

I want to meet that ford humper and kick him in the nads for being an idiot.

I think it's totally awesome to be able to do something like that. Beats the hell out of High School Auto Shop which was all I had available

Have fun! I look forward to seeing the pictures as you guys progress.

trust me, i've been saving up FOR-EVER to go to automotive school and finally finished that with a 3.8GPA ... they came out with HP Eng Building/Tuning two years ago and I was dead set. $15k for one year and that's the entire program. My current teacher is an accomplished tuner here in St. Louis and the engine building teacher is a machinist with racing engine building background. It's a pretty good program considering it's still only two years old and there isn't much of a solid structure yet. I'm just being a little sponge and taking in all I can

GOOD TO HEAR! Would love to get a chance to do what you are doing!
I thought this was a high school class. But since you have to pay for it I can see how it could be great. Everyone there is going for the same goal which is to learn not just get a degree
