You're adding an aftermarket gauge right? You don't need to take the stock one out; leave it there to do its thing.
Take off the little block above the oil filter (2*10mm bots), drill and tap pipe thread to the size of the sending unit on the little stub on the casting (you can't miss it, it looks like GM made it for this) and run your wiring to your new gauge pod. Wire up to a switched source and illumination feed and you're done!
I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.

so youre sayin i can take the block off, put it on a bench and do all the work there, then put it back on the car? if so then thats what ill do, as long as i dont have to drill and tap while under the car.

That guy - do you know if that block is big enough to install a oil temp gauge along with an aftermarket OPSU?

it's not big enough to mount two. However you can get some fittings and Tee off for the second sending unit. However, if you have headers, be mindful of the installation of any fittings cos you wanna make sure it clears the primaries

dont worry there's a lot of space to work with. The main issue you'll have is getting that cover off if one of your primaries are in the way. The 2 bolts are pretty long and one of them usually back into a primary and in this case you'll have to either pry the primary over or loosen the header up some. Getting it in, you can shorten the bolt so you get a decent bite on the block when tightened but short enough to clear the header while its first threaded in. Good luck!
