What do you mean by freezing up? Is it forming frost on it or is it just no turning?

Freezing up... like instantly.. What I don't understand as well is why it does it freeze when I have the heater on as well.. Once it freeezes it knocks pretty loud..

it sounds like the bearings in the compressor are gone. I'd put a new one on and have the system recharged.
when defrost is on the A/C compressor cycles on and off to help dry the air blowing on the glass to clear it quicker

Could be a number of things. If an o-ring went bad and leaked, could have caused the bearings to seize. Even Crazier, the inside of a compressor is very sensitive, I have seen them weld themselves together on many occasions!

You need to find out what the problem is and what caused the problem. I dont know if replacing a bad bearing is going to help...there is a reason why the bearing went bad.

And let me know before you buy a compressor if you have to go down that route. I work with a bunch of manufacturers and I get them dirt cheap. In fact I supply a lot of retailers, mechanics, etc with the compressor they sell onto customers.

any questions or anything let me know. I have tons of diagrams I can email you to show you the common things that goes bad with compressors and how they got that way. coreyv@eliteautoac.com

    Good luck man!
