99 trans am ws6 fuel problem
The other day I was driving my car. I parked it when I got home then when I went to leave about 2 hours later the car cranks but doesn't kick over. I can hear the fuel pump kick on and I'm getting fuel to the injectors. I sprayed starting fluid down the throttle body and it'll kick over until that burns out. HELLLPP car only has 12k miles. Put about 800 on it already this year.

what's the pressure at the rails? Does it stay constant?

^^ This. You should have 58 psi at the fuel rail. Almost has to be a fuel issue if it will run on ether. Has the filter been changed lately?

That sounds like an evaporative emissions hose -- shouldn't be any fuel going to the throttle body. You can rent a fuel pressure tester from most chain parts stores these days. When the fuel pressure falls off, our cars either become hard to start or won't start at all.

Check the pressure first. Go from there after that, my $$$ is on low pressure.

Alright so if the pressures bad then fuel pump?

Fuel pump, fuel pump hose in the tank, fuel pressure regulator, in-tank fuel sock or fuel filter. That's really about it. Most people upgrade to a Racetronix pump - their kit comes with a new hose and both in-tank socks. I just installed one in our car earlier this month.

When I replaced our Suburban pump, the dealership actually had the best price. You just have to ask for "the on-line price" if they quote you list.

Checked fuel pressure while priming the psi was at 58 what do I do now?

What does the pressure do after the pump kicks off? It should run for approximately 2 seconds when you energize the ignition. After checking that, crank the ignition and watch the pressure gauge to see what happens.

After it stops priming the gauge stops at 52 psi. I didn't try cranking it.

Ok - that is good then. It should only drop around 5 psi and hold that pressure for about a minute. So it sounds like you have fuel at the rail, but it is not getting into the engine. The engine will start if you shoot it with ether and run for a few seconds on that, right? Something must be up with the injector wire harness or fuel control circuits. Have you checked fuses and relays?

Yes it'll run on ether. I checked all the fuses under the hood and everything was fine.

Hmmm. Then the injectors must not be firing. Do you have a noid light set?

No I do not. What is that?

It is a light that plugs into the injector harness -- easy way to test and see if the signal to fire the injectors is getting to them.
Here's an example: Autocraft Noid Light Set (6-pc) AC680: Search no more for the best Multimeters & Analyzers at Advance Auto Parts

Ugh great.. So I should probably just get a diagnostic reader and hook it up basically and that'll tell me what's wrong. Probably the quickest way right?
