    98 Stock Z - Now What?

    I have a 98 z28. Everything is stock except it has a custom exhaust w/ a cutout from the previous owner. There is no headers just the cutout & pipes.

    The first owner had it till 70k and was an older guy who treated it very nice and never attempted to wake the beast. The second owner was a 19yr old kid and I know it was driven hard at least 50%-75% of the time. I am the third owner. I got the car at 104K and I just hit 120K and have had it for 2 years. I have had hardly any problems with the car up till now.

    I really want to do some mods to the car. First would be suspension and the next would be speed. The suspension is stock mind you so its got a lot of creaks, sqeaks, & noises.

    My question to everyone is do you think its worth putting $ into the car w/ 120k on the engine?
    If no - suggestions?
    If yes - suspension suggestions, performance suggestions?

    Might wanna look into a rebuild for the engine/tranny before you start tweaking the susppension, just to cover your bases before you drop some serious $$ to upgrade handling, of a car that suddenly won't start/shift.

    It's no fun, but it might be the right thing to do in your case.

    So what would an engine rebuild/tranny cost?
    What would it actually be changing/upgrading in the engine?

    New stuff varies, you could get an Ls6 crate for about $5500. I would look for a low mileage motor and trans out of a wreaked one. Depending on how many miles on the wreak I'd say anywhere from 1500 to 3500 for motor and trans.
    Don't fear junkyard stuff, most have warrantys and some yards will let you leak test before you buy.
