I dont knwo where this belongs but i thought i woudl get more help here, my gf has a 96 firebird v6 automatic, and its having problems, when she steps on the gas it staggers adn the check engine light comes on the engine revs over but no speed increase?? any opinions??

pull the code from the check engine light, that would be the easiest way to start

Does it: Sputter, misfire, blow spark plug wires, CEl flashes every time you step on the gas and stay on constantly?

Is over 70,000 miles or 140,000 miles you might have a problem with your coil packs and the plate they sit on. It took me almost a year to get my answer so I know it well.


GM had a recall on 96-97 V6 Firebirds and Camaros that at 70,000 miles the plate that the coil packs sat on would fry out. It was a bitch to trouble shoot but once it was replaced everything worked fine.

haha i just pulled the code and well basically she hasnt done a tune up since she got it i think so its time for me to get to work, goign to start out by spark plugs and wires then do oil change and filters, man this car was not treated nearlly as how i treat my ta

Sounds like a misfire to me.

After plugs and wires, and problem still exsists, try cap and rotor (if that's what the V6 has).

No cap and rotor for about 20+ years now.. Although we do get water on the center coil when it rains..
