Nope, all Imps are 5.7L. What he was referencing was some of the Caprices being 4.3L, and look the same under the hood, right down to Home Plate. However, All Imps are Electric Fan (IIRC) where as 9C1 and 4.3 Turd punchbowls have an engine driven fan.

Oh ok I see. When I get it I'm a try to get a 96 or maybe 95.
I'm lookin at one right now that has the rear end messed up. If I get it I'm put some 3.73s or 3.42s
How's the read end on those cars?
Is the same rear end as the f-bodies?

no, its an 8.5 inch 10 bolt. Its a little bigger and a little stronger. In my opinion, it the rear end the f-bodies should have came with.

So the 8.5 can handle a little more power/torque. ?
The impala rear end won't fit on fbody?

These 8.5's are pretty stout pieces. Up through about 88 they used 28 spline axles. After that they all went 30 spline. Had same pinion spline count and diameter as the 12 bolt. Only real difference is the 8.5 inch ring gear diameter verses 8.875 for a 12 bolt.
Dave Henninger showed years ago that with good parts the 8.5 worked great in his 8 second 160+ mph 71 camaro.

Can't be swapped in a 4th gen, they have no provisions for that (thorn in my side) torque arm

Yes that's what I was referring to. All the SS Impys had LT1's, but if you suspect a clone, look for "P" on the 8th digit.
I haven't heard of cloning being a problem but I guess it could be done, wouldn't be too hard to take a 4.3 caprice and stick wheels and emblems on it. But you'd have to go as far as sticking disc brakes on the back along with the 8.5 inch rear. A 96 would be harder to clone, I don't think the floor shift and console would be something easy to come up with. Shucks even the 8.5 inch rears aren't all that plentifull either, since only the LT1 B bodies got it.

You are right, I'm pretty sure all Impy SS's had electric fans. My buddies LT1 Caprice still uses the engine driven fan and if I remember right it also has an auxillary electric fan too.

So only the 96 impalas have disc breaks in the back?

Do they come with posi rear end or what?

Another thing. Did those cars came with a production number?
Cause I seen one on a dealership and it had on the add that it was a certain number car.
How can I find that out. ?

All the SS Impalas had disc brakes in the rear. If you find one that doesn't, somethings up, be skeptical.
They all had positraction rearends too.

Don't know about the production numbers.

6 speed swaps in Impalas are nothing new. There have been many swaps over the last several years. When I lived in Ohio, there was an Impala club that put on a huge meet at Indy, never saw so many SS Impalas in one place. I'll bet there were at least 10 or so with a 6 speed swap and that was several years ago.
LS swaps I know have been done. As a matter of fact, someone I know is doing (or has it done now) a 6.0 swap in one.

I'm try to find out more info on the 6speed swap.
It would be cool to have a 6speed impala. But I think a big car has to be auto.
And for the t56 swap the PCM has to be tuned out or how does it work?

As far as the computer goes, if it's anything like the Fbodies that swap to a 6-speed, you simply flash in a 6-speed tune.

My 96 had 156000 miles on it and the only problem I had was the trans cooler line broke and I had to replace the radiator too because they wouldn't come apart. It was a tank in the snow, drove great, looked great, no other problems - loved that car.

Well I know the LS swaps have been done. It fits easily,,,ever see one of these cars with the hood open?
In all seriousness though, I'm sure there are mods that need to be done, wiring changes, integrating an LS computer, motor mounts will be different. Not sure how the oil pan clearance works out on these B-bodies either.
But it can't be all that bad to swap, you have tons of room to work, and LS motors have been swapped into just about everything nowadays.
Best bet would be to jump into a group of B-body owners, I'm sure they have websites. I know for a fact there are B-body clubs out there so they are probably on the computer too. You'll probably find a group of them that are running LS motors. I've seen a few around in the last few years so I know it's not uncommon.

Headers are made for them (or used to be??) Can't remember the brand name, but you'll know them when ya seem em'. They come up from the heads and most of the tubes run up by the valve covers and then back down, and those were shorty versions I believe. There are also long tube versions that I've seen on a couple of 10 second impalas,,but I don't know if they were customs or not.

Borla made a very nice catback system for them a few years back (it's what we put on my buddies LT1 caprice) that is very docile sound wise and it really woke the car up. Very nice setup, not sure if it's still available or not.
The same LT1 handheld tuners for the 4th gen LT1's also work on the Impalas, or better yet, find a custom tuner in your area that still does the LT1's. Just a catback, 3.42 gears and a tune on my buddies Caprice and it lays rubber, gets sideways, a blast to drive. Didn't take much to make it fun.
