    95/96 impala ss.

    Hey guys.
Anybody here have or had an impala ss ? 95/96
I always liked those cars. Speacially black or burgundy.
And I see my self buying one of those in the future.
My question is. Are those a good cars? I knw it's a GM car n I never had problems with Cars from GM.
But is there anything I need to knw.
What's the gas mileage? Is the motor/trans good on those cars?
    What bout electrical problems?
I met a guy a while ago. N he said since he got that car he always had problems with it.

Hope someone can help me out with diz questions.
    Thanks guys.

they are good cars... my brother has a 95... they do suck gas down big time though... they are VERY comfortable and have a shit ton of room inside...

common problem with them (as all LT1's) is the opti spark and it's location...

96' is also the only year (last year) the shifter was on the floor, all the rest on the column like a granny.

Could be. Mine's bone stock, save for tires and exhaust- 13K original miles.

More on topic, to the OP, they are pretty durable cars- It's a 9C1 cop car for the most part. The higher mileage cars suffer from rattles and squeaks, and general wear and tear coupled with less than stellar interior materials to begin with. They of course share the LT1 stigmas as mentioned, Opti, Oil Leaks, etc, but I've seen many of 'em (any of the B Body Variants) come into the shop with 200K and more on the clock. One thing that was mentioned is roomy- That's an understatement. The thing is wider than my GM800 platform truck from doorpanel to doorpanel. It is a supreme pleasure on the highway, but a battleship around town. Hell with all that nonsense, I say get one, and enjoy it!!!

    Thanks for Replies guys!

Those are beautiful cars n I always liked them.
I'm sure the gas mileage will be kinda bad cuz it's a huge car. But since is a huge car that's why it makes to be a beautiful car.

Is there any way to find out how to knw if it's a real ss? I knw the grille is different, door handles, and I think the taillights.

What's the hp on those cars?
What size are the stock rims?

I'm trayin to get the 96 since is the last one. And like some else said here. It has the shifter on the floor.
I just don't like the digital dash,

i believe the rear quarter glass on the caprice comes to a point instead of how it is on an impala....

Good friend of mine has the caprice with the LT1. White wall tires and wire wheel hubcaps and all. A real sleeper. Biggest difference in performance between that and the SS is the rear gear change. SS got a 3.08 and the Caprice got 2.93's. But that was remedied quickly with a 3.42 gear change.
These heavy cars really wake up with a gear change, and better mileage to boot. He gets 14-15 around town now and 20+ highway.

To check for a legit LT1 B body,,,,the 8th digit in the vin will be "P". All of the B bodies that originally had LT1's will also have the 8.5" 10 bolts. SS's also received rear disc brakes, while Caprices got drums in the rear.
Beware of L99 caprices, as they look like LT1's but are actually 4.3 litres. The vin tells all.
So it's hard to fake an SS if you know what you are looking for.
Very easy to change the opti on these cars too,,,there is tons more room to work with verses a tight F body.

Edit: Awsome cars by the way, I'd own one in a hearbeat, would even consider getting rid of one of the 4th gens for an SS Impy if the right one came along.

Good info. Great write up. But it seems alot of work,
So not all the impalas come with lt1?
    The l99 is a 4.3 motor?
