Monte carlos are pretty good. They are also a full frame car which will help with safety. The only thing that stinks is the 305.

Yeah, I looked up the engine specs in the 88 monte carlo SS, its a dog (at least on paper) but I can tune it up a little I suppose.
The handling potential is what matters to me at the moment. Does anyone know what kind of lateral force they are rated for (our 4th gen F-bodies have a rating of 0.84g)
How about tuning them up, anyone have any knowledge of what the suspension set up is like and what mods will do for it (I can do springs and shocks, not sure what else in "stock" class) probably upgraded sway bars etc.

Oh, are those 305s fuel injected and are they the same ones in the 3rd gen f0bodies of the same year?

(Pardon my ignorance I know nothing about 80's cars....I always call the 80s the dark ages of autos)

a 305 will get you less than 200rwhp I have a 307 in a jensen but it's a totally different beast. If you can build that 305 then around 380ish tops that's with headers.

You might as well throw out the 305 and put in a 350. On the outside you could not tell the difference. You wont get much out of it. If you upgrade shocks and springs it should be pretty decent handling wise. Another thing is box the lower control arms up front and box all the rear control arms. None came with fuel injection only a 4 barrel.

i know this may sound retarded, but what about taking a different plan and although it would not be fun to own, a very nicely built honda with small turbo, peppy, reliable, and great gas mileage... put a bigger tank in and that way you can travel far distances without filling up like the other cars will have to do
granted it takes some of the fun out of it, but maybe you can do it really classy like and have some fun with it... or if you want to stay american something with the ecotec engine in it... those thing respond surprisingly well to mods

A crazy fun race car would be a late model circle track car converted for your race. Of course it would be open class and I really dont know what those cars sell for. I doubt you can use a car like that for your race but just a thought.

    Now now boys, don't fight!

I'm pretty much a honda hater myself, but its true they are fairly reliable and there's always a handfull in this race every year......probably because being so slow makes them easy to drive. LOL

Now a 71 GTO....there's a challenge! I might just have to go for it anyway though, I see a beautiful (non original) resto-mod done to near factory specs not too far from me (I'm just concerned about what I don't know...its almost too cheap)

Ahhh, too many options....but keep the suggestions comming, eventually I might find that perfect ride that just screams RACE ME!
