Did he ever run? he usually spoke in direct support of one conservative candidate, or another, and not in a way that was building his base, like most with ambition do.

Most of the best ppl to become President didn't want the job. Washington is a great example.

Yep, in a country like ours which has no "rulers"... often the best people to take on these powerful positions are those who don't crave power. Best way to keep someone in check is to pick someone who checks themselves.

I believe John Wayne would have made a good president. And it wasn't solely because of his mans man personality. Sure that is part of it, being strong and tough. But he was also an intelligent man and always wanted to be portrayed as not only tough but also a thinker. I think that is a skill a POTUS needs to have. Knowing when to use diplomacy and or outsmart the opponent and when to use force and just destroy them.

Washington was a special circumstance, and fortunately for us he was a believer in the principles shown by Cincinnatus , otherwise we would have a dictatorship. The nation was new, the states were still more or less independent “city-states” if you will. He was the first and last of the American. “Pro-Consuls” . He was called upon by the states, more or less because he was pretty much the one unifying individual in the Rev’ War, and people looked past what state he was from but saw him as an American he led the Colonial Army of all of the states.

He pretty much had to lead as President for the nation to survive and thrive.

As much as I think highly of John Wayne, I don’t think he would ever have been in such a unique circumstance. And if he had any ambition for office he would have easily gone the same route of Ronaldus Maximus.

I thought "destroying" someone was to PC and unacceptable and that diplomacy was always a better choice? Hmmm ...
