Thats a tough call, protecting your dome is not something I would cut corners on, and you have to make sure what ever you buy meets the tracks requirements.

09 EclipseGT 75 Chevy 4x4- 2001 Trans-Am 13 F-XT
This is the one I went with. It's about the cheapest SA2005 I could find. It comes with a helmet sock too.

Bright Red- 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6
I bought this one....it also came with a protective sock or bag or whatever you want to call it.

it's NHRA legal due to being Snell M2005 certified, it's DOT legal, and it is cheap...These pass the same tests that the high dollar helmets pass, so I have no issues with buying or wearing it.2002 Silverado Z71 ECSB HPTuners tuned by yours truly

I looked on line ebay and a lot in internet sites, and about $150 was the lowest for a snell 2005 bucket. Then I went to a bike shop in Grand Rapids, Mi and bought a snell M2005 for $75.00. I'm not sure of the brand but I think it is an HJC. It is in Mi and I am in Florida. Check out the local bike shops, I did and was pleasantly surprised.

First off Jimmy let me tell you that a MC helmet is NOT what you want or need. Race car helmet is a complete different design!! You need a helmet that is made to protect you in the car NOT riding a MC.
That being said here are a few since your on a budget.

Here is a small bit of a add in Hemmings a while back......
"Suggesting a helmet with a Snell rating was sound advice as it is the premier standard for helmets. With the 2005 helmets due this month a 95 would be getting long in the tooth. At least in road racing circles, a 95 will only be eligible for one more year under the grace period. A 2000 would have 5 more years (plus 1 year grace) and the 2005s will be good for 10 years.
Motorcycle helmets are designated by the MA nomenclature. Automobile helmets are designated by SA. A motorcycle helmet is designed for one frontal impact. Car helmets are designed for multiple impacts from multiple angles (think ragdoll in an overturning car).
I would never recommend scrimping on safety equipment and suggesting a cheap helmet from a motorcycle shop is not particularly responsible. We see this all the time at the high-performance driving schools. The guy with the high-dollar car with all the go-fast goodies shows up with the Pep Boys helmet. We tell them if they have a $50 head then buy a $50 helmet, or at least buy more life insurance for their spouse's benefit."Don't be afraid of the bottle!!! Be afraid of your tune!!!

He says the helmet must be street legal for his local track's approval. Therefore none of these race only helmets will work as they are not DOT approved. Not sure why a race track would require a DOT helmet but if they do there isn't much you can do about that.
I would never put one of those $40 helmets on my head you might as well were a baseball cap. Look at HJCs they are quality helmets for the money.

I use a Suomy sportbike style helmet. Sportbike helmets are nice for us street trim racers because they are light weight and breath well. Drag racing season is the hottest times of the year, airflow is good!

If investing in a helmet i would also go ahead and invest in a neck collar. My father and i have dragsters and we are required to wear them but once you get used to wearing one it could help alot in the event of a crash. I have a impact one shown on this page and i realy like it and would rather wear one of these than worry about huring my neck.
