    Drag racing ?

I have a a4, should I leave the car in drive or third? I tried third last time and was crossing the finish line @ 5100 -5300 rpm

The really debate is if you shift from 1st then 2nd to 3rd or if you just leave it in 3rd. Most people I have talk to say that your tranny will have more line pressure if you shift manually trough the gears.
If you come in 2nd it just means you are the first to lose.

Also I was told to lean on the convertor ? Is that where I have 1 foot on the brake and 1 on the throttle and bring the revs up until the tires are ready to break loose?

I just leave mine in overdrive,,,it doesn't matter, as you will never get into overdrive in a quarter mile unless you run a ton of gear. I still have stock 3.23's in mine, and was crossing the finish line in 3rd gear at about 4500 rpms and trapping 104 mph. Not even close to using overdrive.
I use the track to experiment all the time with tuning and driving both. You can try a pass in overdrive and a pass in drive and see how the car reacts. It's the best way to find what a particular car likes. Just try it and see.

When I had my a4 95 camaro it did better when I left it in Overdrive. When I kept it drive it slowed me down alittle and shifting it was even worse. I think my best time if remember correctly was 13.717 at 100mph. Just play around with it and see what works best.

So far my best was 13.6 @104. I was told the track is a slow track and should be able to run .4 - .5 better at other tracks. There was cars there running 13.3-13.4 and on other tracks they were running high 12's.

Its different for each situation. If you have stock gearing it really shouldnt matter. If you have taller gears leave it in D because it will shift into OD when you will still be in your powerband of D. Each car runs differently though. Thats why its called test and tune.
