Don't get me wrong though, nothing turns heads like a sweet classic, and in my book the 1969 ZL-1 Corvette may still be the most powerfull muscle car ever.

My dad had a 68 Roadrunner with a 383 magnum and a 4spd, he mentions how much he misses that thing all the time!

tire and suspension technology is nowhere near what it is today. Even changing to new tech though only the very fastest cars would have a chance against an ls1. Those cars were very heavy and it took a lot of power to get them to go. My brother just sold his 383 magnum challenger and bought an 02 firebird WS6. The challenger was a cool car but it wasn't even close to the firebird in performance.

Each response has included a piece of the issues that your gf's dad is going to encounter.
The Windsor, with its smaller ports, would actually outperform the Cleveland when built properly. The ports on the Cleveland were just too big for the engine technology. A properly built Windsor could potentially put out 350 hp at the crank. The 600 cfm is the correct size for that engine.
The transmission (probably a C-6, perhaps a C-4) was not known as a performance transmission, but could operate satisfactorily.
Where he will falter is in traction. It has a plain leaf-spring rear suspension, and it is extremely doubtful that he had a Detroit locker. Those normally only came with the 428 Cobra Jet.
So, even if the engine is built, he is traction limited.
BTW, the weight of the 69 'Stang was actually right around 2900 lb., although it looked heavier than that.
I raced my gf's brother, who has a built 396 SS Chevelle (1967).
He ran in the low 15s with street tires.
The main thing you want to avoid is pi**ing off the dad of your gf.

I think if it was me, I would respect Him and His car and just nod when He talkes about how great it is. After that just humbily hand Him the keys to Your car and ask Him to take it for a spin and see what He thinks.

351 Windsors are very good engines. I had a 68 Ranchero with a modded one and a 4 speed. But LS1 would win , esp if the Stang had a auto.

i have a 71 chevelle, and i love that car to death, but even if it is a decent 350 build it still has trouble breaking 12.50's, it is EXTREMELY badass tho haha , turns many heads.

But like it was said before it was tires that limited drag times, a STOCK LS-6 would pull mid 12's from the factory with a decent set of slicks tho

Even though you are gunna hand him his ass, just respect the car, its where yours came from (kinda) wrong family tho.

I raced a 69 or 70ish BOSS 429 that had the big fog lights up front. I was driving my 95 TA with a lt-1 m6 and I beat that thing bad! That stang was built bad ass with huge tires and wheelie bars. The exhaust came out under the doors. It had a full cage in it too. To bad the dude didn't know how to drive it. He just sat there and made one hell of a smoke cloud! Scarry part was I was running 225 snow tires! You'd beat him if he didn't really build it good. I agree with the person that said to let him take it for a spin and see if he still wants to go for it. If you don't you'll never hear the end of it. I guess either way you won't. You know how chicks are!

BTW '70 Mustangs (including Boss 429s) don't have headlamps in the grill....probably nothing more than a plain-jane '69 fastback with fat tires and worn piston rings (explains the smoke cloud)

If the kid knew how to drive that was most likely a 10 second car! The motor really sounded radical. He started a break stand before the light turned green and just roasted the shit out of the tires! I don't know what year the Boss 429's are, but it looked like 69ish with the stickers and fog lights. The body could have been a cobble job, but it sounded really nice! It was that dark green color. I'm not sure if that helps for the year or not. I love and respect the muscle cars! Even more if they have a Big Block.

69 ZL1 was an 11 second car wasn't it? And muscle cars were HEAVY. People say if you crashed into a modern SUV with one the muscle car would put a hole in the SUV just cause of the way they were built, but that makes them heavy.

My brother had one when they used to be new and I don't know the 1/8th mile or the 1/4 mile ET's. What I can tell you that stock, they would be lucky if they could break its street tires loose. And that was without posi-traction.
I wouldn't race their car because its obvious they put some money into the car and you might make them feel real bad.
The other 351 was called a 351 cleavland engine and that was supposed to be the performance package. That car had about 300hp at the flywheel and was considered a "dog" from the days when they were new and up to the present.
The only thing you have to worry about is if they are not telling you truth about everything they put into it.
The 69 mach 1 came with a few other engines as well.

    390 and 428 big blocks.

    I own a 69 Mach I with a 390. (rated at 320hp)

Even if the guy had a 428 (underrated at 335hp) you should beat him.

    That's what i was thinking.

My cousin has a 71 Mach 1 with the 351 Cleavland. It's stock and will still burn the tires with no problems, but the LS1 will kill it.
