    Can I Beat a 69 Mach 1

So here goes. I drive a 98 Z-28, M6, T Tops, with intake and Flowmaster exhaust(I know, I know too restrictive. Soon to be SLP Loudmouth). Anyway my girlfriends parents own a 69 Mach 1, candy apple red with a 351 windsor bored 30, 600 cfm holly carb, with a very mild cam, and flowmaster exhaust (40 series) very beautiful car. It has stock gears and the stock 3 speed cruise o matic. They seem so assured they can beat me, and since they are my girlfriends parents I don't want to talk smack. I honestly don't think there's any chance they could take me but I'm just wondering is there any chance that they could beat me. Also if anyone has raced a 69 Mach 1 I'd like to hear the outcome.

My guess is it wouldn't even be close. You'd embarrass them.

It wouldn't even be close. In 1969 the Mach 1 had two engines.. the 351 Windsor engine which was not the performance engine. It had a two barrel carberator and intake, and was geared real slow.It started out at 255 hp which is about 210 rwhp stock. My brother had one when they used to be new and I don't know the 1/8th mile or the 1/4 mile ET's. What I can tell you that stock, they would be lucky if they could break its street tires loose. And that was without posi-traction.
I wouldn't race their car because its obvious they put some money into the car and you might make them feel real bad.
The other 351 was called a 351 cleavland engine and that was supposed to be the performance package. That car had about 300hp at the flywheel and was considered a "dog" from the days when they were new and up to the present.
The only thing you have to worry about is if they are not telling you truth about everything they put into it.

Like it was mentioned before just make sure thats all they have and nothing else. But from the mods they claim to have, you could probably push your car across a finish line and still win by 3-4 bus lenghts. (this includes stopping a couple hundred times to catch your breath)

I love old Mustangs (had a 69 coupe) but yeah...an LS1 equipped car will pretty much beat almost any car from the muscle car era. Cars now are just much faster.

I can see where this is going, BTW I had a 73 cougar with a 351C auto with slicks and it would spin second with a 2bbl. so.......

I'm going to be 50 in a couple months so I was around during the muscle car days. There was some pretty fast cars back then but it looks like the 426 Hemi was the engine to deal with. Atleast I think it was 426c..Lets see there was a 427 that think was a chevy and I think and there was the 428 which I think was the Cobra Jet. I may be wrong. But the Hemi cars did 11's right from the factory!

I believe you give them too much credit. They wouldn't do 11's off the factory floor. They were rated, what, maybe 425-450 hp, but that was by yesteryear's measurements. By today's measuring standard, it would probably be more like 375 or something. Plus, most were very heavy, 2 tons +, plus they had the old bias ply tires.

Yeah, the Hemi and the LS-6 were rated at 425 and 450 but were much closer to 500 and up. Insurance was killing high HP cars even back then. Their big handicap back then was traction and weight. And for the most part a big handicap now is age. Unless they've been rebuilt recently those things are almost 40 years old. And while that ain't much in dog years, in car years thats a bunch.

Anyway, I think the only 69 Mach 1 to worry about would either but a totally hot rodded one or a 428 CobraJet (them was uber cool).
But there is something to be said for not beating chickie's daddy.

I'd like to see an example of what you're talking about, one that was street legal of course. I read about the Super Stock Hemi 'Cuda that supposedly run in the 10's, but it wasn't street legal. I found this list of magazine tests for various cars & times.

In High school (Late 80's) there was this guy in are neighborhood in His 50's. He had the baddest car around. Baby blue 67 Chevelle 396/375hp 4sp factory 4.11s (you could lick the gas tank). His car was slightly modded and He ran 13.6 at 105mph.

The reality is that they are actually slower then that in stock form.

There was a show on the speed channel, I can't remember the name but at the end of the show they would have a car on the dyno and the owner would guess how much hp they thought it would put down. On one episode they had a Hemi Cuda and it put down 310rwhp. The truth is if a LS1 came out in 1969 it would have been rated as a 346/426hp LS1.

With the improvememnt in tires and susp upgrades you can get the older muscle cars to run faster then there factory tests though, that is how the man in are neighborhood ran 13s.
