Back from the track. . . WTF?

I went to the track last night for the 1st time ever to run my car. My first pass I was just scared shitless, the tires broke loose hard so I let off the gas about 1/8 way down the track. It ran a 16.1

Second run. I laid on it pretty hard off the line. Again the car broke way loose so I let it go just a bit and ran a 14.6

3rd run. I said fuck it and floored it all the way through the track. I burned my tires more than half way down the track and ran a 17.1 < Gay

My car is a 1998 z28 with 70k. Runs like new, only upgrades are a MagnaFlow cat back and a complete SLP intake(ram duct, lid and bellows). My tires are garbage, 245 45 17 on SS wheels. They are generics with a bit of rot but still show good tread. The car also has 2.73 gears.

How can I improve this time? I know the tires are at fault a lot. . . But is there anything else? There were plenty of F-Bodies there and all ran 13's +

    lookin for a ws6

    re

I am guessing a4 . I have had a a4 and m6. The m6 requires alot more practice to be able to launch . You have to find your cars limits on traction and live on that edge if you want fast times. You should definately be in the 13's.

    ^ What does that mean?

    It is a AT.

It sucks my wheel wells are covered in burned on rubber. I really did not think I needed to lube my wheels wells.

    Damn. . . . . . . . I was just expecting a faster E.T.

    Oh well. . . . . . . . . . . .

what was your MPH?? and you need to learn how to launch it and peddle it out of the hole without the tires spinning. and what was your 60' times?

Not a street tire...they will get slicker when warmed.
Street tires you want to do nothing more than chirp them to clean them off.

Another guy at the track just lit up his street tires. Then ran, he ran a 13.8

I just don't realy wan't to roast my tires.
I thought about just getting some slicks, but I am not in the mood to kill my axle.

It is up to you if you want to burn up your tires for no reason.
Also don't use the waterbox with street tires. All you end up doing is taking water with you to the starting line. Makes your launch harder, along with the guy behind you.

A street tire isn't designed the be hot as they aren't pure rubber like a slick/DR.
I cooked some older street tires off my car, as I rolled away from the burnout I put my car in 3rd gear and got on the gas. Went sideways at 60MPH without using the clutch.

Also...MT ET radials only like being warmed for 4-5 seconds. And those are damn near a slick.

Yeah, definitely work on that launch. I ran a 1.768 60' on Nittos... with a best time of 12.04... and that was missing 4th and dropping 9mph off my trap speed... I am sure I could have hit 11.9xx

    Maybe next time.

pedal it like you've never pedaled before... try to get that 60ft down under 2 secs... and keep it straight down the track...and you should hit the 13's

Trap speeds and passing times arent always relevant. You could run a 20 second quarter mile and still trap over 100 MPH. A hard launch with good traction is what gets you good times. Quick and proper shifting, assuming the given car is a manual, is what makes a high trap speed. Your car being an automatic means you only have to worry about getting a good launch.

Get rid of those tires first. You don't have the type of mods that should have you spinning halfway down the track or having to do serious peddling. Then work on your launch instead of just going WOT right off the line roll into it. The trick is to spin as little as possible while not making the car bog down too much. Sounds to me that right now you just need to work on not spinning the tires so much and most of it is your tires.

I think you can do it, just do a minor burn out then stall the car no more than 12 to 1300 then roll into the throttle rather than just flooring as fast as you can. I ran a 12.67 @ 110 on street tires with a 2.73 with a 1.89 60' with a lid, lt's, duals and a tune. Just practice on the street a little and you'll be fine the next time you go to the track. Remember if it starts spinning, level the throttle off don't put it on to the floor.
