2 Shifting Questions
First Question
When crossing the finish line, are you supposed to leave it in gear and use the brakes until the rpms get low, immediately take it out of gear and use the brakes, or downshift while using the brakes?
Second Question
In a rolling race, (say from 40 mph), whats the order that you're supposed to do everything?
Are you supposed to:
Go 40 in high gear (~4th or 5th) to have a cruising rmp
[First honk] Clutch in...rev match...downshift to racing gear
Hold clutch in
[Third honk] Clutch out and hit gas.
-or-
Do all the downshifting right before the third honk
-or-
Go 40 in low gear (~2nd or 3rd) to have a high, passing rmp
Keep clutch out
[Third Honk] Hit gas

I don't roll/street race, so on your first question....
The only thing I certainly wouldn't do is downshift, otherwise, its really personal preference. However, my normal routine is to lift off the throttle, put it in neutral, and use the brakes to slow the car. The idea being to decrease the wear & tear on the engine/driveline as much as possible (brakes are maintenance items, and will have to be replaced anyway).

throw in the clutch once rpms drop then just pick your gear when your when you slow down to make the turn

for the 40 mph roll, ( you would be in probly 5th) i would drop down to 3rd maybe 2nd, before you started to get ready, and have everything set up, then just pucnch it and go from there.
---- when doing rolls like that, its called " dropping gears"

from a 40 roll I like to go into third from 5th..your start in mid rpms but you will catch up and pass the person eventually..and 4th pulls almighty in mid to higher RPMs
I wouldnt to 2nd..ive tried it..too close to redline for me and thats just one extra shift I have to do

So before you punch it, do you cruise at 40 with the clutch out in the lower gear? Or do you have to coast with the clutch in? What will be less likely to tear something up?

40 roll have it in 2nd and punch it on the third honk. The speed gained from the better rpm will be more beneficial then waiting for rpm's to build. You can shift 2-3 in fractions of a second if you have a good shifter and know where 3rd is as opposed to waiting seconds in 3rd gear to get into the power band.

It takes a good amount of time to get really good at driving a manual and alot of people never learn how to get the most out of them, but once you do it's so much better for the street. You'd really have to have a manual for a couple of years and learn how to drive one well before you can truely say which one you like better. It does take some talent to drive one and not just skill. I know people that drove them for many years and suck. I'd say give the manual a try seeing you've done auto's already. Might as well try both for you can have an experienced decision when your ready to get a more expensive car later on.

Silver- 2000 Camaro SS
i mean... should u sit at 5k rpms in 2nd gear or just let it upshift so u cruise? if it upshifts u will have to wait for it to downshift. if u manually hold it in a low gear, once u punch it u will instantly get the power, then u can move it all the way up to OD whenever u want and letthe car shift by itself
anyone understand? is that good?

i wouldnt sit at 5k..usually with the 4l60E's gearing you can sit in second gear at around 3.5k with a 3.42 rear..I used to do it in my truck all the time...so it shouldnt be a problem..as soon as you punch it though take it back up into drive and the transmission will do the rest
